Voter Information

There are approximately 70,000 residents in St. John’s who are eligible to vote. Residents of St. John’s who are 18 or older and who have ordinary residence at least 30 days before the election are eligible to vote.

Important Dates

Monday, Sept. 20 is the last day for the City to issue voter kits by mail, so that voters can return by mail. 

Thursday, Sept. 23 is the last day to return your completed kit by mail. If you miss the deadline, you can drop your kit in the drop box located outside City Hall, or visit a Satellite Drop off Centre in your ward on Election Day.

Monday, Sept. 27 is the last day you can pick up your kit at City Hall if you have not received a voters kit by mail.

Tuesday, Sept. 28 is election day - you can visit a Satellite Drop-off Centre in your ward (open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) to drop off your completed kit or register to receive a ballot and complete your vote in person. 

Voters List
The City receives the Voters List from Election NL. Voters who are on the list will receive a vote by mail kit in September during the election period. Voters can ensure they are on the voters list and receive a vote by mail kit by:

  1. Checking the Voter Registration Portal to ensure they are listed, if not, register to vote.
  2. Downloading and submitting the Inclusion, Update, or Removal on Voter’s List Form and acceptable identification.
  3. Calling 311 or 754-CITY (2489) for assistance.
  4. Visiting Access St. John’s, located on the main floor of City Hall at 10 New Gower Street with acceptable identification.

Make your Vote Count
Find out who the candidates are after the nomination period. Candidates will be officially announced on September 2. 
The election period is approximately the second week in September up to 8:00 pm on election day, September 28.

Vote by mail kits should begin arriving to voters by mid September. When you receive your vote by mail kit, follow these instructions:

  1. Sign and detach your voter declaration form at the bottom of the instruction sheet.
  2. Complete your ballot by voting for:
    • 1 Mayor
    • 1 Deputy mayor
    • 1 Ward Councillor
    • Up to 4 Councillors at Large
  3. Refold your ballot, place it inside the white secrecy envelope and seal it.
  4. Place the sealed secrecy envelope and the signed voter declaration inside the yellow return envelope and seal it.
  5. Return it to the City of St. John’s in 1 of 3 ways:
    • Drop it into any Canada Post mailbox by Thursday, September 23
    • Drop it inside the ballot box located outside City Hall up to 8:00 pm on Election Day, September 28
    • Drop it off at a Satellite Drop off Centre in your ward on Election Day only from 8am - 8pm
