STREET CLEANING

Street cleaning removes dirt and debris from City streets to provide an aesthetically pleasing and healthy environment for City residents. Street cleaning reduces the dirt and debris going into storm sewers, thus enhancing the quality of storm water and prevents physical damage to pavement.

There are three separate street cleaning categories:

1. Streets Outside The Downtown Area (NOT SCHEDULED) - The City of St. John's plans to sweep each street outside the downtown area at least once a year.

2. Downtown Area - To notify the public of when downtown streets will be swept the City publishes the complete list of streets to be cleaned in a daily newspaper (all that is required by the City's By-Law), sends a booklet to all houses in the Downtown area with all streets and the dates they are to be swept listed and puts the list of streets on the web page. On the web page the user can either put in a street name and find out the dates the side of the street will be cleaned or put in a date and get the list of streets to be cleaned on that date. As well, there is a weekly reminder in the City's ad in the Telegram that street cleaning operations in the Downtown are ongoing.

This schedule is updated by early April of every year.

3. Individual Service Requests (NOT SCHEDULED) - The City also provides street cleaning on a demand basis throughout the year in response to traffic or environmental related problems such as oil spills, buildup of debris at intersections and in traffic lanes which may interfere with traffic flow and conditions which may interfere with storm water flow.

To report street cleaning concerns please call the Department of Public Works & Parks-Streets Division at 3-1-1.
