General Information

The City of St. John's, through its Recreation Division, is committed to enhancing the quality of life of the citizens of St. John’s by making available a diverse range of recreation and leisure opportunities. We encourage active living through fun, physical activity, sports, life-long learning and education, as well as healthy eating.

Recreation Program Registration
Four times annually for summer, fall, winter and spring seasons. Registration begins for St. John's residents on a specified date and continues until programs are full. Non-resident registration ususally starts several days after resident registration.

Open or Update Your RECconnect Account
When you register online or by phone, you must ensure your RECconnect account is activated and up to date at least 48 hours before the registration time. You can do this online, by calling us or by dropping into the H.G.R. Mews or Paul Reynolds Community Centres.
 
If you are opening a RECconnect account, you are required to submit proof of residency as we offer staggered registration with priority given to residents of St. John’s.
 
To open an account:

  • Online: choose ‘Create an Account’ in the top right on the RECconnect website.
  • Call 576-8499 or 576-8631.
  • Drop into the H.G.R. Mews or Paul Reynolds Community Centres.
     

My Wish List 
If you usually register for several programs at once or register for popular programs such as swimming or summer camps, you will want to use the wish list feature.
 
Prior to registration day, log into RECconnect and browse the available programs. Once you see a course you intend to register for, click the Wish List button to the right of the course title. Now this program is in your wish list!
 
There is no limit on the number of courses you can add to your wish list.
 
When registration opens, log in and go to your wish list and click the My Cart button near the top right, and click the ‘Add from Wish List’. Now your shopping cart holds all the courses you’d previously selected. Select the family member you wish to register in each course and add to your cart.
 
When you are ready to proceed to the Checkout to finalize your registration, it will confirm the courses you’ve chosen if there is space available and notes if you are on the wait list for any of the selected courses. You will then be prompted to pay for the courses using a credit card.

Frequently Asked Questions
What method of payment do you accept?
We accept cash, debit, or credit card. Payment in full is required for all Recreation Division programs at the time of registration. Pre-authorized payments and post-dated cheques will not be accepted.

Refund Policy
A refund/credit/program transfer application must be submitted 14 days prior to the start date of the program or facility rental, except for the After School Program which must be submitted one month prior to the first day of the upcoming month.The refund does not include the $25 non-refundable deposit for day camps. After that, a refund or credit may only be issued for a medical reason which prohibits continued participation in the program. A medical note must accompany the Request for Refund Form and must be submitted prior to the program end date. Refunds or credits will not be issued for classes missed due to illness; lost or stolen passes or requests submitted after the program end dates. Submission of the Request for Refund Form does not automatically guarantee a refund.

NSF Cheques - A $20 fee will be charged on all NSF cheques.

Family Discount
Families registering more than two children for the same program for a given week can apply for a Family Discount of 20 per cent for the third and all subsequent children. A refund request form must be completed by the client and submitted before the program end date to be reimbursed for the family discount. Please check the course description of the program you are registering for to determine if a family discount rate is available.

Waitlists 
Our waitlist is not prioritized. If a spot becomes available, all on the waitlist are contacted by email and the spot is filled on a first come, first served basis.

If a swimming class is filled, it is advisable to add the participant’s name on the waitlist for the appropriate level in the desired time slot. The waitlists will apply to that specific time slot. It will also be used to determine demand for particular levels of swimming. Where there is sufficient demand on several wait lists, additional new classes may be added where space and resources allow. For any new classes added waitlists will not be used and spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Program Cancellations
Every reasonable effort will be taken to contact patrons in the event of a program cancellation. Program cancellations and building closures will be posted on the City of St. John’s website under Public Advisories
