June is Recreation Month

June is Recreation Month across the province! The City of St. John’s recognizes the importance of recreation and leisure activities to enhance quality of life.

While our recreation programs have been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, staff have stayed connected with residents by sharing HIGH FIVE® activities for families to enjoy at home, including several short videos demonstrating healthy and fun activities for your family. We are currently planning for summer programs, online registration begins 7 a.m. June 11.

The City of St. John’s, along with our partner Recreation NL, believes that more than any other year, it is important to remember that recreation includes all the activities that bring health and wellness to our lives; activities such as walking and hiking, family bike rides or gardening and growing vegetables in your backyard. Throughout June check out the REC NL contest on social media and enter to win by submitting a picture showing how you and your family/bubble are keeping active during the pandemic.

In June the Canadian Red Cross, is offering free Water Safety for Families through interactive game-based learning online sessions that highlight the importance of first aid and water safety knowledge. Each 15-30 minute session is led by Red Cross Prevention and Safety volunteers, including City of St. John’s aquatic staff, and everyone is welcome to join in online.

Our Recreation staff miss all of our participants and friends and look forward to getting back to offering programs as public health guidelines permit. We encourage you to celebrate Recreation Month with your family and bubble members.
