The City of St. John’s is pleased to announce plans to celebrate Canada Day virtually for 2020.

On July 1 at 6:30 p.m., the City will present a 30-minute television special, airing on NTV. The special includes a feature presentation for Memorial Day as well as performances from Conway, Eastern Owl, the Other Women Walk and Poet Laureate Mary Dalton, as well as a special performance by Alan Doyle.

“We are very excited to celebrate our nation’s birthday with this showcase of some of the best talent our city has to offer,” said Mayor Danny Breen. “It is also important that we recognize Memorial Day, and we are pleased to have the Canadian Armed Forces’ support in highlighting our role in the Great War and the many remarkable monuments the City of St. John’s has that commemorate our province’s contribution to keeping our country safe.”

Other events scheduled for Canada Day include:

  • Canada Day Across the Country, broadcast live at 2:30 pm, and Canada Day Together, broadcast live at 9:30 p.m. on CBC and Canadian Heritage’s social media platforms
  • The annual Canada Day drumming celebration at 3:30 p.m., organized by Legacy 150 Celebrations Society.

“We look forward to joining with our fellow Canadians, coast to coast to coast, as we celebrate the 40 anniversary of our national anthem and our nation’s birthday virtually this year,” said the Mayor. “I encourage everyone to get their red and white sidewalk chalk, crayons, or string lights and show your Canadian Pride. Let’s get in the spirit and decorate indoors and out with Canadian flags, symbols & colours.”
