Stepping Outside the Pedestrian Mall

Duckworth Dining Card

There's so much more to explore in the downtown this summer.

The Water Street Pedestrian Mall has been well attended and has been popular with residents, visitors and downtown businesses. The goal of the mall was to encourage people to see the downtown as a destination during summer, providing ample space to visit businesses safely, enjoy the atmosphere and most importantly, shop local.

Although the Pedestrian Mall only includes a four-block zone on Water Street, don’t forget to step outside the Mall and explore the many other businesses surrounding the Mall on Water Street, Duckworth Street and Harbour Drive. Many restaurants and bars bordering the Mall have expanded their capacity with patios to enjoy the summer sun. Other businesses are also offering special opportunities for patrons as well, including great deals and summer specials.

Businesses outside the Mall are easily accessible via the many coves and laneways that run perpendicular to Water Street, making it easy to expand your day and take in all that our Downtown has to offer. Check out duckworthdining.com and eat at participating Duckworth Street area decks or restaurants during the month of August for a chance to WIN a prize valued at over $500, including one night’s accommodation at the Duckworth Inn and a gift card bundle.

As a new event that came together very quickly, Council has been exploring opportunities for improvement and working with local businesses and the Downtown St. John’s Business Improvement Area Association.

Wondering where to park?
There are plenty places to park when you visit downtown this summer. Our map identifies a number of parking lots and garages with plenty space for parking. It’s only a short walk to the mall from any of these parking lots, and much to see on your way.

Cyclists and Skateboarders Welcome!
The Pedestrian Mall and the downtown are great places to ride this summer. Please remember that pedestrians have the right of way and be safe, especially when the Mall is crowded on a hot day! You may need to step off your bike or skateboard to navigate safely through crowded areas, but bikes and skateboards are welcome in the Mall.

Maintain Safe Physical Distancing
On hot days, our downtown is full of people. This is great to see, but please remember to maintain safe physical distancing of 2m (6ft). Please wear a mask when crowds are large, and remember to take your hand sanitizer. Many local shops have sanitizer on hand (pun intended!), so be sure to use it when you browse and shop in the local businesses.
