The City of St. John’s is accepting applications for the position of Crossing Guard with the Department of Community Services for the 2015/2016 school year.
 
DUTIES:

  • Be responsible for safety of children crossing busy street intersections;
  • Maintain a pleasant, courteous, and helpful attitude toward the school children and the general public at all times;
  • Escort children across the street at designated crosswalk locations using due caution and displaying a crossing sign;
  • Prevent children from crossing the street during traffic until it is safe to cross;
  • Report any dangerous driving or crossing practices, or problem conditions and/or behaviours to the appropriate authority;
  • Establish and maintain effective relations with school children and the public;
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be able to work with children on a daily basis and communicate effectively and clearly; learn and apply traffic regulations pertaining to pedestrian crosswalks; perform duties in inclement weather; and maintain a clean and neat appearance. The successful applicant will be able to obtain an RNC Certificate of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check. Applicants may require a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Training and orientation will be provided to successful applicants.
 
COMPENSATION:
These are casual seasonal positions with ten (10) hours per week; one hour in the morning at assembly time and one hour in the afternoon at dismissal time. The rate of pay for this position is $12.34 – 13.71 per hour.
