A Global Day of Giving

Giving Tuesday Logo

GivingTuesday is a global movement for giving and volunteering when charities and non-profits encourage companies and individuals to support their communities.

The REAL Program provides recreation and leisure opportunities to children and youth in financial need. It matches them, up to the age of 18, with one organized recreational or leisure activity of their choice.Participation in sports, music, art, dance and other activities are essential for healthy child development. Providing these opportunities can be expensive and is cost-prohibitive for many families. REAL helps cover these costs and is fully dependent on community support to do so as 100% of all donations to REAL go directly to providing placements.

Individual Donations
There are many ways individuals and corporations can support REAL. To learn more about REAL and how you can help give the gift of play to a child in St. John’s, contact REAL staff at 576-8684 or real@stjohns.ca.

If you have a RECconnect account to register for City of St. John’s recreation programs and courses, you can also donate to REAL through it – log in to your RECconnect account or go to www.stjohns.ca/real

Anyone can make a donation to REAL by calling 709-576-8684 or visiting in person at the H.G.R. Mews or Paul Reynolds Community Centres, or Access St. John’s on the first floor of City Hall.

When Sherry Murrins’ son Justin was tragically killed in a car accident, the family searched for meaning. While nothing can take away the deep sadness, the family have found joy donating to REAL from “Justin’s Birthday Bash”.

Corporate and Community Group Donations
Contact our staff by calling 576-8684 to learn how your business or community group can donate to REAL.

Recently the Kiwanis Club of St. John’s made their seventeenth annual donation to REAL. The Kiwanis were among the first supporters of the REAL Program and have been supporters every year since. We are very grateful for their continuing generosity. Here Past President Sig Lenser presents a $1,500 cheque to REAL staff.

During the 201st Royal St. John’s Regatta the beer tent was operated, for the first time ever, by the Newfoundland and Labrador Craft Brewers Association. The REAL Program is delighted to be one of groups that received a donation from the NL Craft Brewers Association. The $2520.21 donation provided 25 placements for local children and youth.

Pumpkinfest is a day-long, annual event organized by and held at Lester’s Farm Market in October. Lester’s Farm Market donated $14,837.16 to REAL from proceeds of the 18th annual Pumpkinfest. REAL staff and participants send sincere gratitude to Lester’s for their continued support. This year’s donation provides 150 local children and youth with recreation and leisure opportunities.
