Key dates for the Ward 3 by-election are below:

• Nominations open - Tuesday, October 1
• Nominations close - Tuesday, October 8
• Last day to withdraw nomination - Wednesday, October 9
• Election period begins - Friday, October 18
• Vote by Mail Kits Begin to be Distributed - Week of October 18
• Last day to return vote by mail via Canada Post - Wednesday, October 30
• Election day - Tuesday, November 5

In accordance with Section 14(5) of the Municipal Elections Act, SNL 2001, c.M-20-2, as amended, notice is given that October 1 to 8 are the days on which nomination of candidates for Ward 3 Councillor will take place.

Nominations must be in writing and state the name and residence of the candidate and be signed by the proposer and seconder, both of whom shall be present with the candidate, who will also sign signifying their acceptance.

The proposer and seconder must be eligible to vote in this election, meaning they must be a Canadian citizen, 18 years of age or older and residents of Ward 3 for the 30 days immediately preceding election day.

The City will use a vote-by-mail system for the Ward 3 election. You can confirm if you are a resident of Ward 3 by using the Ward Look Up. A further announcement regarding the voters list and online voter registration will be made available in the coming weeks.

Voters are encouraged to vote by mail or drop off completed ballots at the drop box located outside City Hall. Eligible voters may also drop-off or cast their ballots at a satellite drop-off/voting centre on election day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters who intend to register to vote at satellite drop-off centre must have acceptable identification available.

The satellite drop-off/voting centre is located at the first floor of the Village Mall, 430 Topsail Roard.

The City is committed to making elections accessible and seeks advice from the City’s Inclusion Advisory Committee to improve accessibility. The following is a list of actions and initiatives taken by the City to support accessibility for the Ward 3 By-Election: 

• A vote by mail format allows voters to cast their vote from home.
• Election information can be found on the City’s website, social media, and through postal mail.
• Election information may be available in alternate format. Please contact the Election Coordinator for more information.
• Accommodations may be available upon request. Please contact the Election Coordinator for more information. If American Sign Language interpretation is required, a minimum of 2 weeks’ notice is required.
• Election materials meet Clear Print Guidelines, where possible.

• Wheelchair accessible
• Service animals welcome
• Wayfinding signage
• Voters may drop off completed voting kits or vote on site

• Privacy voting booths include: pens, large print voting instructions and list of candidates, magnifier and additional lighting
• Use of personal assistive devices to mark ballot (own pen, mobile device, smart phone, reader apps, etc.)
• Election staff assistance available on request
