The City of St. John's welcomes residents to volunteer with us. We value all volunteers and realize they are an integral part of our programs and services. Our goal is to provide a positive volunteer experience to encourage lifetime volunteers.

There is always a need for volunteers with specific skillsets to enhance programs and services offered by the City of St. John's. Some areas include:
| Adult and Seniors Programs |
| The City offers a variety of adult and seniors programs with skilled instructors at various facilities around the city. |
|
Advisory Committees |
| City Council relies on a variety of committees to inform decision-making. Committees are made up of City staff representatives and volunteers throughout the community. |
| Volunteer Junior Lifeguard Program |
| The City of St. John’s Volunteer Junior Lifeguard Program offers youth age 13 to 17 the opportunity to gain experience in professional lifeguarding and swim instruction. Volunteers support aquatics staff by monitoring pool areas, change rooms and public spaces and assisting with program set-up. Volunteers must be currently enrolled in junior high or high school. |
| Volunteer Junior Leader Program |
| This program offers youth ages 14 and over a hands on introduction to working in the field of recreation. Participants are mentored by recreation staff, gaining experience in the daily duties of a Recreation Leader while developing teamwork, confidence and leadership in a fun, supportive environment. Volunteers must be currently enrolled in junior high or high school.
Time Commitment
Schedules (day, time, location) are arranged with Volunteer Services. |
| Cruise Ship Ambassadors |
| Greet cruise ship passengers and crew at the Port of St. John’s (May to October). As a Dockside or Walking Ambassador (walking roles run July to August), you'll share local tips, give directions, hand out maps and more. Training and info sessions are provided for this volunteer opportunity. |
| Inclusive Services |
| Join the City of St. John’s Inclusive Services Team through programs like TIME™ (Together in Movement and Exercise) and PAL (Pursuing Active Lifestyles). Volunteers support staff in delivering safe, inclusive programs by assisting with set up/take down, offering encouragement and helping with modifications and adaptations of exercises and promoting a welcoming environment. |
| Special Events |
| Get involved in special events held year-round, like Canada Day, Pumpkinfest, Move It, and more! Volunteers help with activities, setup/cleanup, food service, and engaging with attendees of all ages—from family events to adult and senior dances, there’s something for everyone. |
| Youth Services |
| Get involved with our youth programs and help create fun, engaging, and active experiences for youth aged 12 to 18 in the community. Our programs promote recreation, creativity, leadership, and wellness through activities like sports, swimming, art workshops, yoga, and more. Volunteers support a variety of drop-in and instructor-led programs held at various facilities throughout the year. |
We value the contributions of our volunteers and the impact that they have on the community as a whole. Each year in April, we celebrate National Volunteer Week.
Our Volunteer Award recognizes residents who have volunteered their time to support healthier environments within the City of St. John's.
