Grants

City of St. John’s grants provide financial and other forms of support to organizations and individuals whose projects align with the City’s strategic directions. These grants help advance community priorities and support initiatives that contribute to the social, cultural, and economic well-being of St. John’s.

Capital Grants

Applications Open: Late October
Applications Close: Friday, November 27, 2026 at 4 p.m.

Capital grants support non-profit groups and organizations seeking financial assistance for the construction, expansion or renovation of a facility. The facility must meet a demonstrated need in the areas of recreation, culture or other community service.

Before applying, applicants must review the policyprocedures, and frequently asked questions resources.

To apply, please fill out the Capital Grants Application (fillable PDF form) and email the completed form to citygrants@stjohns.ca before 4 p.m. on the last Friday of November.

Community Grants

Total Annual Funding: $1.3 million
Applications Open: Late October
Applications Close: Friday, November 27, 2026 at 4 p.m.

Funding is available in the following categories: Arts Organizations, Individual Artists, Community Organizations, Special Events and Festivals, and Sporting Organizations.

The Grants to Arts Organizations program has the following goals:

  • To support the artistic development of individual artists.
  • To support arts organizations in fulfilling their mandates.
  • To contribute to the grown and sustainability of the St. John's arts community.
  • To improve the well-being of the community

The Grants to Individual Artists has the following goals:

  • To support the artistic development of individual artists.
  • To support arts organizations in fulfilling their mandates.
  • To contribute to the grown and sustainability of the St. John's arts community.
  • To improve the well-being of the community.

To apply, please fill out the Individual Artists Application (fillable PDF form) and email the completed form to citygrants@stjohns.ca. If you have previously received a grant from the City of St. John's, you must complete a final report form prior to being eligible for a new grant.

The City of St. John's supports non-profit organizations seeking financial assistance. We will consider supporting educational, multicultural, recreational or inclusive programs and services. Activities must take place within the city.

The City of St. John's supports non-profit organizations producing events of one or more days that take place in the city. Events should:

  • Generate economic activity
  • Showcase and develop cultural assets
  • Enrich the life of the community
  • Enhance community engagement
  • Appeal to a varied audience

The City of St. John's supports non-profit organizations that:

  • Enhance participation primarily in youth sport
  • Maximize the use of facilities within the city

To be considered, a provincial sport governing body must sanction your organization.

Meetings, Conventions & Sporting Events Grants

The City of St. John's supports non-profit groups and organizations seeking financial assistance related to hosting meetings, sporting events and conventions. 

The meeting, convention, or sporting event must have at least 75 percent of delegates, athletes, coaches, and/or officials from outside the province, in order to be considered eligible.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, but must be received at least 14 days prior to the scheduled event in order to be considered eligible.

Youth Travel Grants

Funding is available for youth who are residents of St. John's who are travelling outside the province for events that broaden horizons in education, sport, culture, or social or political interests.

This includes youth who won the right to take part in amateur championship sporting events and youth attending formally sponsored symposiums, conferences, seminars, competitions, and more. Youth are considered up to 29 years of age and registered or attending a secondary or a post-secondary institution.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, but must be received at least 14 days prior to the scheduled event in order to be considered eligible.

Building Safer Communities Grants

The Building Safer Communities Grant Program provided funding to community-based service providers to develop or strengthen crime and violence prevention and intervention initiatives or programs for children, youth, young adults, and their families in the City of St. John’s. This grant program was made possible thanks to a three-year funding commitment from Public Safety Canada, announced in February 2023, to enhance community safety and collaboration.

This grant program has now closed.
