Submit an Access Request

The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015 gives people the right to access information and records in the custody or control of any public body in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Anyone can request information. You do not need to be a journalist or a lawyer to make a request.

Do I need to submit a request?

If you are unsure, please ask. Certain records are available to the public without submitting a formal request. When possible, the City of St. John’s will provide you with access to information without having to file a formal request. Examples of these records include:

  • Publications
  • Policies and guidelines
  • Forms
  • Minutes of Council meetings
  • Terms of Reference

How do I submit a request?

Please fill out the Access to Information Request form. Once completed, you can email, fax, or mail the form to the ATIPP Coordinator using the contact information listed on the form. Make only one request per form and try to be as clear as possible about the information you want. If you have any questions, please contact the ATIPP Coordinator at 709-576-8429 or atipp@stjohns.ca.

Is there a fee?

There are no fees for submitting an access to information request. In rare circumstances, you may be charged a modest fee for copying records, mailing records, or for time spent locating the records you have requested.

What can I expect?

  • The Coordinator has a duty to assist you. Please feel free to ask any questions about the request. Also, keep in mind that they may ask for clarification about the information requested.
  • The Coordinator will not disclose who submitted the request. However, if you are requesting your own personal information, the Coordinator may need to tell other people who submitted the request to locate records.
  • When you receive the requested documents, some information may be blacked out (redacted). This is because the City may withhold certain information, such as personal information. You will be advised why the information was withheld.

How long does it take?

Requests should be completed in 20 business days. You will be advised in writing if your request will take longer.

What if I am not satisfied with the City's response?

You have the right to appeal any decision about access to records made by the City, including how your access to information request was processed.

You can also make a complaint to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
