Strategic Plan
Our City, Our Future is the City of St. John’s long-term strategic plan, setting direction for the period 2019–2029. It helps guide priorities, decision-making, and the work we do every day.
The plan includes strategic directions designed to guide the City over ten years, while the goals are set for the term of Council. Each new Council reviews and adjusts these goals to reflect emerging and changing priorities. The City then identifies specific actions through a departmental planning process, which results in an annual action plan. The Strategic Plan Goals were reviewed with staff and Council in 2026 to confirm that all goals still reflect the priorities of the City.
Vision
Our City Our Future was created to shape and direct the City's strategic decisions. It sets out a long-term vision for St. John's as a progressive city, shaped by its geography and history, where people want to live and feel they belong.
Check out the video message from the Mayor about the plan.
Strategic Directions
The City has four strategic directions:
- Sustainable City: We want to be a city that is sustainable today and for future generations; economically, environmentally and financially.
- City that Moves: We want to be a city that builds a balanced transportation network to get people and goods where they want to go safely.
- Connected City: We want to build connections that strengthen pride, belonging, and a sense of place, helping people feel connected to their neighbourhoods, the broader community, and the city.
- Effective City: We want to have the right plans, tools, and processes in place to focus on what matters most, deliver strong services, and make decisions that benefit the community.
