Fire & Emergency Services
St. John's Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) provides fire and emergency protection in our region. We offer services to the municipalities of St. John's, Mount Pearl and Paradise. Backup emergency services are provided to a number of surrounding towns in the Northeast Avalon Region. The SJRFD coordinates and cooperates with government departments and other groups and agencies for the effective delivery of emergency services.
Our department maintains a fleet of 29 units. This includes front-line apparatus and support vehicles, and a wide variety of support equipment.
Services provided by the St. John’s Regional Fire Department include fire suppression, road traffic accident response, medical response, hazardous materials' response, and specialized rescue operations. The department’s specialty teams are trained to respond to high-angle, confined space, hazardous materials and water rescue incidents.
We also work hard to reduce emergencies. We conduct pre-fire planning, identify hazards, manage emergency contacts and keep hazardous material inventories. This is very helpful in reducing damage and disruption, and increasing speedy response.

Message from the Fire Chief
The St. John's Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) operated under the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador since its inception in 1892. In 1992 it was transferred to the City of St. John's and formally mandated to provide emergency protection to the cities of St. John's and Mount Pearl. From that point forward, the department has grown to provide full fire and emergency services to St. John’s, Mount Pearl, and Paradise along with service agreements for fire and emergency services within other municipalities on the Northeast Avalon.
Built upon a strong foundation of tradition and excellence in fire service delivery, the SJRFD continues to work toward improving our capability and capacity to serve citizens who rely upon us for protection. Innovation, advancement and education are some important values which define the culture of the SJRFD in both service to residents and safeguarding the welfare of our members.
As we step into our future, it is the people of the SJRFD who continue to be our greatest asset and source of inspiration as strategies are planned to meet the challenges of providing a holistic fire and emergency service in a modern world.
