Crossing Guard Program

Safety around schools is a top priority for the City of St. John's.

For drivers, it's essential to adhere to reduced speed limits, pay attention to all posted signs, exercise extra caution, and never pass school buses when their lights are flashing. Stay alert for crossing guards and children, especially near crosswalks. These measures are in place to protect children as they arrive and leave school zones.

The City of St. John's Crossing Guard Program provides dedicated crossing guards at designated elementary and primary schools. These crossing guards are there to ensure that children can cross the street safely. Parents are asked to remind their children of the following safety tips in school zones:

  • Always obey crossing guards
  • Wait well back on the sidewalk until instructed to cross
  • Make sure people driving see you before crossing
  • Walk quick, but don’t run
  • Always use crosswalks, stop signs, or traffic signals when crossing the street

Become a crossing guard

Crossing guards play an important role in keeping children safe on their way to and from school by assisting with the crossing of children in a safe and controlled environment. Crossing guards are designated to primary and elementary schools during school arrival and dismissal times specific to each location.
