Microchipping offers a permanent form of identification that stays with the life of your pet and is recognized worldwide. A microchip is a radio-frequency identification (RFID) implant that stores information, such as a unique registration number. RFID uses radio waves to send data between two devices: the chip and the scanner. When scanned, the number on the chip links to the owner’s information, so they can be contacted about their lost pet.

This Microchip is NOT a GPS, rather it is powered by a scanner that sends a signal to the chip, and then reads the unique number stored on it.

A microchip is about the same size as a grain of rice and is implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades using a needle. This can be done as an outpatient procedure and does not require any sedation or anesthetic to perform.

Once registered, the information attached to the microchip can be updated at anytime by the owner.

Microchipping at Humane Services

Humane Services offers microchipping services for pets of the City of St. John’s at a cost of $40.25. This service is offered by appointment only and subject to availability. To book an appointment for your pet, complete the attached Microchip Clinic Registration form.

Completed forms can be emailed to humaneservices@stjohns.ca, or dropped off the Animal Care and Adoption Center at 81 Higgins Line during open hours.
