Collaboration & Recognition
The City of St. John's has an Environment and Sustainability Experts Panel which provides expertise, opinion, and perspective about environmental and sustainability matters. This panel provides advice to City Council on various issues and initiatives.
In addition, the City also has national partnerships that support progress on its climate change commitments and recognize progress that has been made, including:
FCM Partners for Climate Protection
We are participating in the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' (FCM) Partners for Climate Protection Program. The program outlines a five-step milestone framework that guides municipalities as they improve sustainability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs).
St. John's has achieved:
- Milestone 1: GHG inventory
- Milestone 2: target setting
- Milestone 3: planning milestones in 2022 for both corporate and community scopes
Global Covenant for Mayors for Climate & Energy Canada
This is the world's largest alliance of cities and local governments in the fight against climate change. St. John's received the Committed Badge and is working towards the Mitigation and Adaptation Badge.
Carbon Disclosure Project
In 2025, the City of St. John’s earned one of the highest environmental transparency ratings globally, receiving an A grade from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for 2025. This marks a significant improvement from the City’s D rating in 2023 and reflects rapid progress in climate action and sustainability.
CDP is a global non-profit that operates the leading system for environmental disclosure by cities, companies and regions, helping investors, residents and stakeholders understand how organizations are addressing climate change.
An A grade requires strong climate leadership where cities must publicly disclose environmental data through the CDP-ICLEI Track platform, maintain a comprehensive emissions inventory, publish a credible climate action plan, complete a climate risk and vulnerability assessment, and set clear climate adaptation goals to address current and future climate hazards.
