National Youth Week

The City of St. John's celebrates National Youth Week annually May 1 to 7. Youth Week recognizes and applauds the talents, passion and achievements of our local young people. In celebration, the City of St. John’s provides several free events and activities open to youth in junior high and high school.

Youth of the Year

Annually, the City recognizes a junior and senior Youth of the Year as part of the Applause Awards. Through their volunteering, extracurricular activities and community involvement they have helped make St. John’s a better place to live. 

Proclamation

Mayor Danny Breen will officially proclaim National Youth Week in the City of St. John’s on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at the regular City Council Meeting at 3 p.m. 

Youth Art Exhibit

Original artwork from the City's youth will be on display at the Wyatt (Great) Hall, City Hall. Public viewing is open May 1 to 15, 2026 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.

Youth Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Everyone is invited to the opening reception to view a wide selection of art produced by St. John’s youth on Tuesday, May 5 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Wyatt (Great) Hall, City Hall. The reception is free to attend. Light snacks and refreshments will be served and there will be live youth entertainment to enjoy.

Youth Carnival

Junior and senior high-aged youth are invited to the Paul Reynolds Community Centre, 35 Carrick Drive, for a free carnival: Thursday, May 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will be giant-sized games, prizes, cotton candy, a photo booth and much more! This is a free event and is limited capacity, first come, first served. 

Youth Swims

Youth swim for free at the following swims during Youth Week:

  • Everyone Welcome Swim - H.G.R. Mews Community Centre: Friday, May 1, 2026 from 7 to 7:50 p.m.
  • Everyone Welcome Swim - Paul Reynolds Community Centre: Wednesday, May 6, 2026 from 7 to 7:50 p.m.
