What We Do

The REAL Program makes it easier for your child to get involved in sports, arts and other community programs without the stress. Here’s how we support your family:

  • Pay Registration Fees: We cover registration fees for the activity your child wants to join, so money doesn’t stand in the way of their passion.
  • Provide Transportation: If getting to practices, games, or programs is a challenge, we provide transportation for families.
  • Lend Equipment: We offer a wide range of new and gently used gear your child can borrow for the season. Schools and community centres can borrow too, so no one gets left out. Got extra gear at home? The REAL Program gladly accepts donations!
  • Support You Every Step of the Way: Paperwork, forms, language barriers, whatever the obstacle our caring staff are here to help. We provide one-on-one support to guide you through the process and make it as smooth as possible.

It's REAL Easy to Apply:

  1. Choose an activity of interest.
  2. Fully complete the REAL Program application.

Deadlines

Applications must be submitted by the deadlines for each season. Given the high volume of applications received, the REAL Program cannot guarantee placements until the process is complete. Late applications will not be accepted.

  • Summer programs: April 17
  • Fall programs: July 17
  • Winter/Spring programs: November 17

Do you qualify for REAL?

To participate in the REAL program, you must meet these qualifications:

  • You must be a resident of St. John's. Please provide a document that matches the address on the application.
  • You must provide proof of income for your family. Your Notice of Assessment is preferred (line 150). Contact the REAL Program for other acceptable statements of income.

Guidelines

  • The REAL Program accepts applications seasonally. Apply by the deadline date for each season.
  • Children and youth get one free activity each season. A separate application for each child and each season is required. Applications are not carried over from one season to the next.
  • This is a service for children and youth currently not enrolled in paid or funded recreation programs.
  • Resources and placements are limited and often in high demand. If a child is placed in an activity, they must attend. If they cannot attend or participate, the parent or guardian must contact the REAL Program.
  • If transportation or equipment is required, contact must be made with the REAL Program as soon as possible.
