The Loop
The Loop is a free outdoor ice-skating trail located in Bannerman Park, which can be accessed from Rennie's Mill Road, Circular Road, Bannerman Road and Military Road.
The Loop opens for the season when temperatures are consistently low enough to make and maintain the ice surface. Call the Loop Line at 709-733-LOOP (5667) to learn if it is open. When weather or ice conditions are unsafe and not suitable for skating, the Loop will close and we will update the Loop Line – so be sure to call before you head out!
When temperatures consistently rise and ice can no longer be safely maintained The Loop will close for the season. This will be announced on the City's website, social media and the Loop Line.
Hours
Once opened for the season The Loop is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. We temporarily close the surface for routine maintenance:
- Tuesday to Thursday: 1 to 2 p.m.
- Friday to Monday: 1 to 2 p.m. and 4 to 5 p.m.
Skating is not permitting while ice maintenance is taking place.
Parking
There is a parking lot off Bannerman Road with a three-hour parking limit. On-street parking is available in the area except where parking restrictions and/or signage indicates otherwise.

Did you know?
The Loop requires ice to be 2.5 cm thick to be safe for skating. Ice is built gradually in thin layers, and skating before this process is complete can damage the surface and expose the concrete below, forcing the ice-building process to restart. For everyone’s safety and enjoyment, please stay off The Loop when it is closed and respect posted signage.
Skate Rentals
The Ukrainian National Federation of Canada – Avalon Branch lease the canteen space at Bannerman Park from the City of St. John’s and offer skate rentals and canteen services during their operating hours. As this is a service offered independent of the City of St. John’s, please reach out to them directly for any inquiries.
