The City of St. John’s took part in Health Canada’s Take Action on Radon Program in November of 2024. Roughly 345 test kits were distributed to residents to test radon levels in their homes. 278 homes participated by testing for radon gas during the winter of 2024-2025 using 91-day alpha track tests. This represents approximately 1% of the community dwellings with 10% of homes testing above Health Canada’s guideline of 200 Bq/m³.
The City of St. John’s is once again distributing radon kits to City residents with about 250 radon test kits available, 50 per ward. Registration will begin on Wednesday, November 26 at 4 p.m. on a first-come, first-serve basis. ID with proof of residency will be required.
Registration for 2025 Radon Test Kits is now closed.
Test kits will be available for pick up in December, participants will be notified when they are available. Pick up will occur at the following locations for each Ward:
Registered participants will be sent an invitation to attend a free radon information session via Zoom. The session will cover the health effects of radon, why it’s a concern, and Health Canada recommendations.
Radon is a naturally occurring gas that enters homes through contact with the ground. When radon builds up to elevated levels, exposure can increase the risk of developing lung cancer. The only way to determine radon levels is through testing.
