During Drinking Water Week, the City of St. John’s highlights the essential role of drinking water infrastructure and the ongoing work required to deliver safe, reliable water to the community. This annual event, led by the American Water Works Association (AWWA), celebrates the importance of clean water and the professionals who make it possible.
Safe drinking water is fundamental to public health and economic stability. Maintaining water systems requires continuous investment to renew aging infrastructure, protect water sources, and address climate and security challenges—all while ensuring consistent, high-quality service.
In St. John’s, water quality is closely monitored and consistently meets or exceeds provincial and national standards. Samples are collected daily from more than 70 locations across the distribution system, supported by certified laboratory technologists who work alongside system operators to safeguard water quality.
The City’s water network includes approximately 650 kilometres of water mains and continued investment in this infrastructure is essential to ensure reliable service for homes and businesses.
Drinking Water Week is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of water systems. Communities, organizations, and industry professionals across North America come together to promote understanding and appreciation of the services that deliver safe drinking water every day.
Our Water and Wastewater Division in the Department of Public Works is a member of the Atlantic Canada Chapter of the American Water Works Association, the largest organization of water supply professionals in the world.
AWWA and its members have celebrated Drinking Water Week for several decades. This week provides a unique opportunity for both water professionals and the communities they serve to join in recognizing the vital role water plays in daily lives.
