City Celebrates Youth Week May 1 to 7

We’re celebrating our youth during National Youth Week with several free events and activities. This week recognizes and applauds the talents, passion and achievements of our local young people. 

Proclamation

On Monday, May 1 this year's Youth of the Year will attend the regular City Council meeting as the Mayor officially proclaims National Youth Week in the City of St. John’s. 

This year’s Junior Youth of the Year is Seth Hyde, a student at MacDonald Drive Junior High who is actively involved in school events and community volunteerism. The Senior Youth of the Year is Cameron Gardiner, a student at Gonzaga High School, who is the founder of the Airport Heights Food Drive and an active community volunteer.

Art Exhibit

Our annual Youth Art Exhibit opens to the public on Monday, May 1 at the Wyatt (Great) Hall, City Hall. An opening reception will be held at 7 p.m. with light refreshments and youth entertainment. All are welcome to attend. The art will be on display during regular business hours, May 1 to 5.

Carnival

Junior and senior high-aged youth are invited to the Paul Reynolds Community Centre, 35 Carrick Drive, for a free Youth Carnival on Wednesday, May 3 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will be inflatables, a magician, giant-sized games, prizes and much more!

Free Swims

Youth are invited to swim for free at one of two special swims:

• Paul Reynolds Community Centre, Thursday, May 4, from 6:30 to 7:20 p.m.
• H.G.R Mews Community Centre, Friday May 5 from 6 to 6:50 p.m.

Please note that registration for these swims is not required, but space is limited.
