The City of St. John’s has earned one of the highest environmental transparency ratings globally, receiving an A grade from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for 2025. This marks a significant improvement from the City’s D rating in 2023 and reflects rapid progress in climate action and sustainability.
CDP is a global non-profit that operates the leading system for environmental disclosure by cities, companies and regions, helping investors, residents and stakeholders understand how organizations are addressing climate change.
“Reaching the A List is a major milestone for our city,” said Councillor Sandy Hickman, Council lead for Sustainability. “This score reflects the dedicated work at the City of St. John’s and reinforces the City’s commitment to strong climate action and environmental leadership.”
An A grade requires strong climate leadership where cities must publicly disclose environmental data through the CDP-ICLEI Track platform, maintain a comprehensive emissions inventory, publish a credible climate action plan, complete a climate risk and vulnerability assessment, and set clear climate adaptation goals to address current and future climate hazards.
In 2025, more than 1,000 cities, states and regions representing over one billion people disclosed through CDP. The City of St. John’s was among approximately 120 cities worldwide to receive an A grade and be recognized as top global performers in environmental transparency and climate action.
