In recognition of World Refugee Day (June 20, 2025), the City of St. John’s is proud to support The Artistry and Culture of Newcomers, a cultural showcase hosted by the
Association for New Canadians (ANC). This inspiring event highlights the creativity, resilience, and cultural heritage of refugees and immigrants through a vibrant display of artistic talent and expression.
The main exhibition will take place on Tuesday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Foran Greene Room at City Hall. The event will feature newcomer artists sharing their work across multiple disciplines including painting, photography, dance, music, poetry, and spoken word. Work will be shared through galleries, engaging displays and live performances.
“We are honoured to host The Artistry and Culture of Newcomers at City Hall,” said Ward 4 Councillor Tom Davis, lead for Economic Development and Immigration. “This event celebrates the diversity that strengthens our city and provides a meaningful opportunity to connect through culture, creativity, and community.”
In addition to the showcase, the ANC will organize additional activities designed to promote cultural exchange, build community connections, and empower newcomers to express their identities through the arts.
“We are delighted to once again partner with the City of St. John’s to mark World Refugee Day,” said Megan Morris, Executive Director of the Association for New Canadians. “This event highlights the important contributions that newcomers make across all aspects of our society, and serves as a reflection of our province’s commitment to inclusion and diversity.”
In addition to the June 24 showcase, a visual art exhibit honouring the art and culture of newcomers will be on display in Wyatt Hall at City Hall from June 17 to July 11, open to the public weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The City of St. John’s has a strategic direction to be a Connected City where people feel connected, have a sense of belonging and are actively engaged in community life. Through this celebration of talent and culture, The Artistry and Culture of Newcomers event and exhibit reinforces the City’s ongoing commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural appreciation.
