The City of St. John’s is inviting young adults aged 18 to 30 to help shape the future of their city through a refreshed approach to engagement.
With shifting demographics and constantly evolving communications channels, getting young people actively engaged in civic matters is increasingly important.
“Young adults have a lot to say, and we want to learn more from them,” said Councillor Nikita Ryall, Council lead for the Youth Engagement Working Group (YEWG). “What grabs their attention? How do you want to reach us? And what local issues matter most in their daily lives? Their feedback will help us create better methods to engage and connect.”
“The choices young adults make about staying, raising a family, starting a business, or buying a home shape the future of our city,” said Kat McKenney, Co-chair of the YEWG. “Engaging them now helps keep St. John’s thriving and sustainable for generations to come.”
The current Youth Engagement Strategy, approved in 2020, no longer reflects the priorities or communication habits of today’s young adults. As a result, the City is developing a new strategy to connect and communicate with residents who are 18 to 30 years old.
Engagement will be open until January 16, 2026. Feedback can be provided by:
Additionally, the project team will connect with key committees and interested parties to gather input. Findings will be shared publicly before the final strategy is developed.
The City recognizes that some people may need alternate ways to provide feedback. If accommodation is required for an in-person meeting or to provide feedback, please email engage@stjohns.ca or call 311 and ask to speak with a member of the project team.
The City has a strategic direction to be a Connected City where people feel connected, have a sense of belonging and are actively engaged in community life with a goal to increase and improve opportunities for residents to connect with each other and the City.
