The City of St. John’s will begin construction of a new 2.6 km shared-use path connecting Airport Heights to the Paul Reynolds Community Centre on Monday, September 15, 2025. The project is scheduled to conclude in fall 2026.
The finished path will be approximately three metres wide, offering a safe and accessible surface for people of all ages and abilities, while connecting to the city’s existing active transportation network. The project will replace sidewalks in certain areas and align with existing trails.
This new shared-use path has been designed with strong input from the community. Public engagement, which began in 2023, shaped key design elements such as path alignment, surface materials, trailheads and rest areas, lighting, crosswalks, signals, and wayfinding features.
During construction, residents can expect traffic delays, lane reductions, and sidewalk closures in the work area.
To complete the work, some trees and shrubs must be removed along the route. However, new trees and shrubs will be replanted, with oversight from the City’s arborist to ensure best practices for replanting, transplanting, and tree protection are followed.
Developing a connected active transportation network is a key action in the City’s strategic plan, Our City, Our Future, and directly supports our goal of building and maintaining a safe, accessible system for all residents and visitors. Planning and construction of several additional shared-use path projects have been advanced to enhance citywide connectivity and support safe, multi-modal transportation for pedestrians and cyclists.
