The City of St. John’s will officially open the new H.G.R. Mews Community Centre on Monday, September 15, 2025. This state-of-the-art facility represents a significant investment in the health, recreation and sustainability of our community.

calendar of recreational swim and fitness drop-in times is now available for the fall, with additional swim times scheduled during the first week to provide an opportunity for residents to experience the new pool.
A Grand Opening event for the facility will take place later this fall.
About the New Facility
Spanning 60,000 square feet, the new H.G.R. Mews Community Centre offers a wide range of amenities designed to meet the diverse needs of our residents. Key features include:
- A 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool with a climbing wall.
- A leisure pool with interactive water features.
- A steam room.
- Electric switchable glass in the pool viewing area for privacy.
- A full-size gymnasium.
- An indoor walking track.
- Convertible courts for squash, handball, or racquetball.
- Two multi-purpose rooms with a partition wall and shared kitchen.
- Dedicated spaces for the BGC and the REAL Program.
- Various accessibility features to ensure a more inclusive facility, which are detailed at StJohns.ca/NewMews.
In addition, the facility consolidates the City’s recreation staff from the old H.G.R. Mews Community Centre with staff located at a leased space on Crosbie Place into one centralized space.
Know Before You Go
Here are a few items you should be aware of before visiting the new facility once it opens:
- The facility will be open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The main gates located at the entrance to the parking lot will close at 10:30 p.m.
- The main reception area has a secured entrance, which means all visitors must check in at the front desk prior to entering the interior of the facility.
- The new facility will not have coin operated lockers in the swimming area, rather you will required to bring your own lock. Locks will be available for purchase at the front desk. The squash, handball & racquetball area has wallet/phone sized lockers which are coin return operated (quarter coin).
- The steam room will follow the public swim schedule.
- Recreation, rental and swimming fees will remain the same. Admission to the steam room is the same admission price for a public swim and is valid for the duration of the swim time only.
- The walking track will be open during regular hours of operation.
- Admission for the walking track is $2 for youth and seniors and $3 for adults. Multi-session passes are also available at a discounted price for 10, 20 and 30 admissions. Indoor footwear is required.

- Court rentals will begin on September 15 for 50-minute sessions. Sessions can be booked in person at the facility or online through RecConnect starting September 21 (account required).
- Public transit to the facility is available through Metrobus Route 12.
