The City of St. John’s, in partnership with the Universal Design Network of Newfoundland and Labrador (UDNNL), has released two new resources to help increase awareness and adoption of Universal Design in homes:
Universal Design is an approach to building and renovating that ensures spaces are usable by everyone — regardless of age, ability, or life stage. It focuses on features that make homes safer, more adaptable, and more comfortable for all residents, now and into the future.
“Universal Design is about creating environments that work for everyone — people of all ages, abilities, and life stages,” said Councillor Lynn Hammond, Lead for Inclusion. “We are proud to work with UDNNL to broaden understanding and demonstrate how achievable it is to integrate these features into new builds and renovations. Thank you to the UDNNL for their support and guidance in creating these resources.”
The new guide and checklist provide clear, practical tools for planners, builders, renovators, and homeowners. They show how Universal Design features can be integrated seamlessly and cost-effectively, helping to:
- Build homes that are adaptable and accessible without compromising style or function
- Reduce the need for costly renovations as needs change over time
- Support seniors, families, people with disabilities, and multigenerational households
- Create a more inclusive, sustainable, and future-ready housing stock
“UDNNL is so pleased to partner with the City on this initiative,” said Sandra Cunning, President and Chair of the UDNNL. “We hope to partner again with the City and with other levels of government, organizations, and industry to develop more UD resources for the community in areas including education, public buildings, and outdoor spaces.”
This initiative supports the City’s strategic priorities to be a sustainable and effective city and aligns with actions in the Affordable Housing Strategy, Healthy City Strategy, Accessibility Plan, and Resilient St. John’s Plan.
