The St. John’s Regional Fire Department would like to remind residents and visitors that there is currently a Provincial Fire Ban in place, which means:
Since Friday July 18, SJRFD has responded to 14 brush fires, six of which were illegal backyard/camp fires. This is unacceptable and deeply concerning given the current province-wide fire ban has been in place since July 11 and the multiple wildfires burning across Newfoundland and Labrador.
Before you light a fire, please ensure you regularly check the Provincial Fire Hazard Map provided by the Department of Fisheries, Forestry, and Agriculture and follow the associated guidelines to practice fire safety. Learn more about these guidelines on our Fire Prevention webpage.
We all have a responsibility to protect our environment, our homes, and our neighbours. Ignoring provincial fire regulations not only puts our region at risk but also shows blatant disregard for the safety of others.
If you witness unauthorized burning activity, please contact Access St. John’s by calling 311 or (709) 754-CITY (2489), email access@stjohns.ca or submit an inquiry online. If the fire you are reporting poses an immediate safety concern, call 911 immediately.
