The St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD), alongside the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1075, is pleased to announce a new partnership with Wounded Warriors Canada focused on strengthening mental health and wellness supports for firefighters and first responders.
“This partnership reflects a shared commitment between department leadership and Local 1075 to take care of the people who take care of our community,” said Fire Chief Sherry Colford, SJRFD. “Firefighters and first responders face unique challenges, and ensuring access to meaningful mental health and wellness resources is a responsibility we take seriously.”
Wounded Warriors Canada is a national organization dedicated to supporting first responders and those who serve. Through programs focused on resilience, recovery and navigating the unique stresses of public safety work, the organization helps individuals and families access the resources they need.
“As President of the St. Johns Firefighters Association, our executive is proud to support this important collaboration with our department and Wounded Warriors Canada,” said IAFF Local 1075 President Jim O’Toole. "Mental health is a critical part of the overall wellbeing of our members. The work we do exposes our members to situations most people never had to face, and partnerships like this ensure our members and their families have access to the support, resources, and programs they need. By working together, we are reinforcing that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.”
Working together will expand the range of supports available to SJRFD members and their families while continuing to build a culture that recognizes the importance of mental and emotional well-being.
“Given the complexity of the situations faced by trauma-exposed professionals every day, no single organization can provide the 100% solution when it comes to mental health and wellness needs of their members and their families,” said Scott Maxwell, Chief Executive Officer of Wounded Warriors Canada. “Partnerships are vital. We are proud to announce this new partnership with St. John’s Regional Fire Department and IAFF Local 1075 and look forward to working together in the months and years to come.”
The City is proud of the collaboration that made this initiative possible and looks forward to the positive impact it will have on the people who protect and serve our community.
