We’re making steady progress clearing streets citywide, but significant widening and snow removal is still needed in many neighbourhoods. Work is being continuously monitored and prioritized based on safety and need — there’s no need to call to request widening. We know that while our higher priority streets are in good condition, there is a lot of work to be done in various neighbourhoods.
Tonight, snow removal and/or widening is scheduled on 24 downtown streets from 11 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday. Please remove vehicles to avoid ticketing or towing.
Work will also continue outside the downtown area. With the amount of snow, we will be working with staff and contractors to do blow back and removals in various areas – including Southlands, Brookfield Plains, Kenmount Terrace, Galway, Airport Heights and other impacted areas. This work will take some time.
The weather-related parking ban remains in effect, and vehicles should not be parked on streets outside the downtown area.
With high snowbanks and reduced visibility, please remind children to stay well away from roadways and intersections. If they’re building snow forts or tunnels, make sure they’re not near the street and that openings don’t face the road. Snowbanks can shift or collapse, and drivers may not be able to see children playing nearby.
We recognize that some residents have called for a state of emergency. At this time, based on the progress achieved and current conditions, it is not deemed necessary. While road conditions remain challenging, we made significant headway today with a number of businesses, government offices and institutions remaining closed throughout the region. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and will take additional measures if necessary.
We will provide a further update later today with regards to waste collection and the updated collection schedule, however we will be cancelling recycling for the remainder of this week.
Mayor Breen and Deputy City Manager for Public Works Lynnann Winsor also did a briefing with local media this afternoon, which you can watch on our YouTube Channel.
