Labour Standards and Wages

There are laws and regulations in place to protect workers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Labour standards

Employers must adhere to the provincial Labour Standards Act. This legislation imposes certain minimum conditions on most employment contracts of service:

• minimum wage levels
• hours of work
• health and safety standards
• vacation time
• other employment related regulations

Human rights

Human rights laws protect employees from unfair treatment and discrimination by employers based on sex, age, race, religion or disability.

Wages

As of April 1, 2024, the minimum wage in Newfoundland and Labrador is $15.60 per hour. This is the minimum amount an employer can pay you per hour.
