Local Immigration Partnerships

Local Immigration Partnerships (LIPs) are municipal or regional coalitions. They are designed to strengthen local capacity to attract newcomers and improve integration outcomes. They hope to enhance economic, social, political and civic participation.

LIPs operate through formal agreements that establish broad-based partnership councils. Councils are charged with developing and implementing strategies to produce more welcoming communities.

LIPs include immigrant and mainstream service providers like:

• academic institutions
• employer associations
• ethno-cultural and religious groups
• federal and provincial agencies
• health organizations
• municipalities
• school boards

Working together, they increase engagement and promote coordination among service providers and other institutions.

The LIP initiative began in Ontario in 2008. It has now expanded to a number of other provinces. There are currently more than 60 LIPs across Canada, including seven in Atlantic Canada. Learn more at Pathways to Prosperity: Canada.
