Youth Forum Coming January 26

In 2023, we’re focused on adding more youth voices to our decision-making.

Our Youth Engagement Working Group are making great progress on the Youth Engagement Strategy which includes more opportunities for young people aged 18 to 30 to have their say and get involved in City matters.

In 2022, we started a series of forums for youth, both in-person and virtual, as a way of bringing young people together to talk about issues they told us were important to them. These forums also provide an opportunity for youth to learn more about what we’re doing and planning that may impact their experience living in St. John’s.

“Youth voices are important - not just as we work to build a City where people want to work, live and play, but as we work to improve services today,” said Councillor Jill Bruce, Council’s lead on youth issues. “It is so valuable to hear youth perspectives as we make decisions on programs, services and amenities.”

At the forum at City Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 29 youth participated in round table discussions with Mayor Breen, Councillor Bruce, city staff and Metrobus CEO Judy Powell. Those who attended learned more about, and provided their thoughts, on sustainability, entrepreneurship, economic development and public transit.  A second virtual session in November tackled three new topics – arts and culture, active transportation and parks, trails and open spaces.

Youth Panel Offers Easy Ongoing Participation

Did you know that residents aged 18 to 30 can sign up for the Youth Panel – a quick and easy online survey – to share opinions and ideas on hot topics? We’re hosting a panel right now on waste and recycling. Participation when surveys are posted is 100% voluntary - as a member you will get email notifications or text messages (you decide!) when there are opportunities to provide feedback to the City.
