On-Street Parking Rates
On streets that are marked with signs to indicate that paid parking is required. There are two forms of paid parking, the PayByPhone App or a pay station. Pay stations are located along Duckworth, and at Water Street near Queens Street. The remaining sections of Water Street and Harbour Drive is PayByPhone only.
Payment in these areas is required Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Parking is free in designated pay areas after 6 p.m. on weekdays, all day Saturdays and Sundays, and all statutory holidays under the Provincial Shop Closing Act with the following exceptions:
- George Street Taxi Layby - Queen Street to Adelaide - Parking is not permitted in these designated spaces between 8 p.m and 6 a.m.
- Snow Clearing - On-street parking in pay areas is restricted throughout the winter on streets which are scheduled for snow removal operations There is also an early morning parking ban from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. in the business district that comes into effect in the winter months. - Street Cleaning – In the spring and summer months on designated days there are overnight parking restrictions on streets that have pay areas for the City to conduct street cleaning operations. For more information please see the St. John's Street Cleaning By-Law and Street Cleaning webpage.
- Special Events - When there are special events taking place in the downtown, such as parades or cruise ship visits, the City may prohibit parking in pay areas. These areas are marked with temporary signage on the street. When these restrictions
are in effect these areas are tow-away zones, at the expense of the vehicle owner.
There are five steps required to make a payment for your vehicle. You need to know your license plate and the zone number before you proceed to the pay station.
- Step 1- After you park your vehicle, proceed to the nearest pay station, then select a payment method using the yellow buttons on the machine, tap or insert - tap is available for Debit, Mobile Payment (Apple/Samsung/Google Pay), or a credit card. You can also insert your credit card (not debit).
- Step 2- Confirm your parking zone number. The zone number will be posted on a sign near your vehicle and on each pay station. Stations will display the zone you are currently in.
- Step 3 - Enter you license plate number, this is on the same screen as the zone confirmation in Step 2.
- Step 4 - Choose the duration (amount of time you wish to pay) for parking and confirm using the green button.
- Step 5 - Make the payment when prompted, either by tapping, or quickly inserting and removing your credit card. Once your transaction is processed, it will prompt you ifyou would like a receipt.
You do not need to return to your vehicle with the receipt after the payment is made. The receipt can be printed if you would like a copy.

PayByPhone app is available on Harbour Drive, Water Street and Duckworth Street. If you do not want to download the app, the toll-free number to call is 1-866-234-7275. A credit card is required to use PayByPhone.
The zone number will be indicated on signs posted in the area that you are parked in. Motorists please look for signs when you are parking.
Parking rates are $1.75 per hour. The time limits in each zone ranges from 2 hour to 4 hours, check for signage that indicates the maximum time limit for the area. After the maximum time expires you must move your vehicle.
