Newfoundland Power owns and maintains most of the street lighting in the City of St. John's We are their customer, and we are charged a monthly fee for this service.

Did you know… When the City of St. John's approves a new subdivision there is always a lighting plan that goes with it? As the subdivision develops, Newfoundland Power installs the lighting as soon as it is possible to do so.

Most streetlights get electricity from the distribution lines at the rear of building lots in the subdivision. The electrical feed is normally buried underground on an easement between two building lots. This is not installed until construction is underway on both adjacent lots. This is why there can sometimes be a delay in getting all the street lighting installed.

Downtown Decorative LED Lighting Retrofit

The City of St. John's, in partnership with the Government of Canada and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, completed a Downtown Decorative LED Lighting Retrofit project in 2024 which was funded through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

The project allowed for the replacement of 270 inefficient high-pressure sodium (HPS) decorative streetlight fixtures located in downtown St. John’s with new LED fixtures This project aims to increase lighting levels on streets and sidewalks, improve safety, and reduce unnecessary light pollution.

By transitioning to LED lighting, the City is not only enhancing the aesthetic appeal of downtown St. John’s, but also making significant strides in reducing energy consumption, which will reduce costs and minimize environmental impact.
