What We Heard: Water Access and the Slipway in Quidi Vidi

The City of St. John’s has released a What We Heard report summarizing findings from public engagement regarding water access and the wooden slipway in Quidi Vidi. The current slipway has reached the end of its lifecycle and is no longer safe to use. Feedback was collected from residents, property owners and visitors on how they currently use the area and potential options to maintain access to the water.  

What We Heard will be shared with at the Council meeting on Tuesday, August 20 at 3 p.m.

Cruise Ships Cancelled - August 20, 2024

Cruise ships Zuiderdam, Holland America Cruise Line, and Le Champlain, Ponant Cruise Line, both originally scheduled to arrive in St. John's tomorrow, Tuesday, August 20, 2024, have been CANCELLED.

Detour - Elizabeth Avenue (from Freshwater Road to Whiteway Street)

Starting on Monday, August 19, a detour will be in place on Elizabeth Avenue, between Freshwater Road and Whiteway Street, due to construction.

Access will be maintained for local businesses. The detour will redirect traffic through Howlett Avenue, Anderson Avenue, Guy Street, and Whiteway Street. Flag persons will be on site to direct traffic. This detour is expected to remain until November 2024.

Lane Reduction – Portugal Cove Road (head of Windsor Lake)

Friday, August 16 to Saturday, August 17 (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.)

Motorists are advised that Portugal Cove Road (head of Windsor Lake) will be reduced to one lane to facilitate the replacement of culverts in the area. Signage will be in place and flag persons will be on site. Motorists may experience delays and are encouraged to use an alternate route, if possible. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

City Seeking Feedback on Downtown Pedestrian Mall

The City of St. John’s is seeking feedback to enhance and improve the user experience at the Downtown Pedestrian Mall.

“The Downtown Pedestrian Mall has become a destination that blends culture, entertainment, and community,” said Ward 1 Councillor Jill Bruce and lead for Special Events and Cruise. “We are continuously looking for ways to enhance the experience for both residents and visitors.”

Cruise Ship Volendam arrives August 15

The Volendam with 1839 passengers is scheduled to arrive in the Port of St. John’s at 8 a.m. on Thursday, August 15, and depart at 5 p.m.
