Polycystic Kidney Disease Awareness Day
WHEREAS: Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is one of the most common life-threatening genetic diseases affecting approximately 1 in 400 to 1 in 1,000 people. Today, approximately 66,000 Canadians and millions of people worldwide live with PKD; and WHEREAS: The PKD Foundation of Canada is the only national charitable organization dedicated to fighting PKD through programs of research, advocacy, education, support, and awareness in order to discover vital treatments and a cure for PKD and improve the lives of all it affects; and WHEREAS: PKD Awareness Day is an opportunity to step up efforts and provide a platform to widely spread the word, share stories, and encourage others to learn more. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September 4, 2023, as PKD Awareness Day in the City of St. John’s. National Tree Day 2023; September 20, 2023WHEREAS: on September 20th, the city of St. John’s proposed that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees. The celebration, declared National Tree Day, will be recognized by the planting of trees in St. John’s; and WHEREAS: National Tree Day is now observed throughout the country; and WHEREAS: Trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind, lower our heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife; and WHEREAS: Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other wood products; and WHEREAS: Trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community; and WHEREAS: Trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September 20, 2023, as National Tree Day in the City of St. John’s. Welcoming Week; September 8-17, 2023WHEREAS: September 8-17, 2023, is Welcoming Week for Newcomers in Canada; and WHEREAS: Sharing Our Cultures contributes towards building inclusive, equitable, and cohesive communities; and WHEREAS: Sharing Our Cultures’ Open House Event on September 15 and 16 is to bring together the community to engage, celebrate, and learn from each other; and WHEREAS: Newcomers are a vital part of our community—bringing fresh perspectives and new ideas, starting businesses, and contributing to the vibrant diversity that we all value. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September 8 to 17, 2023, as Welcoming Week in the City of St. John’s. National Forest Week 2023; September 17-23, 2023WHEREAS: Canada’s forests are a valuable, renewable resource that contribute to our economy and the livelihoods of our communities; and WHEREAS: Canada’s forests play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, clean air and water and wildlife habitat whilst being an important aspect of climate change mitigation efforts; and WHEREAS: The City of St. John's and its citizens rely on the surrounding forests for livelihood, health, and recreation; and WHEREAS: This annual one-week campaign with the theme of “Canada’s Forests: Supporting Biological Diversity” will be celebrated across Canada by individuals and organizations. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September 17–2, 2023, as National Forest Week in the City of St. John’s. Energy Efficiency Week; September 23–29, 2023WHEREAS: takeCHARGE is a joint initiative between Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro aimed at creating energy efficiency awareness and delivering programs that promote electricity savings to the residents of this province; and WHEREAS: Energy efficiency is important for the people of St. John’s and our whole province, as it helps reduce the demand on the electricity system and the impact on the environment, while helping homeowners and businesses save energy and money; and WHEREAS: Energy Efficiency Week 2023 is focused on providing Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with the information they need to save energy and money! WHEREAS: Community support has been critical throughout the Arthritis Society Canada’s 75-year history, enabling the organization to fulfill its mission to fight the fire of arthritis with cutting-edge research, bold innovation, fiery advocacy, and evidence-based information and patient-centered support; and WHEREAS: Arthritis is not just arthritis. Arthritis is serious. It causes debilitating pain, restricts mobility and diminishes quality of life. Six million Canadians – 1 in 5 – live every day with the fire of arthritis and there is no cure. Without a greater spotlight on this growing issue, the number of Canadians with arthritis will rise to nine million by 2040; and WHEREAS: During Arthritis Awareness Month this September, we seek to raise voices and awareness, and we are encouraging everyone who lives with arthritis – and all those who know and love them – to fight the fire of arthritis; and WHEREAS: The Arthritis Society Canada is a Canada’s national charity dedicated to extinguishing arthritis for good. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September 2023 as Arthritis Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s. Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; September 2023WHEREAS: September is recognized around the world as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; and WHEREAS: Throughout the month of September, Candlelighters NL shares information about Childhood Cancer and how it affects families here in Newfoundland and Labrador; and WHEREAS: Throughout the month of September, Candlelighters NL advocates for awareness of childhood cancer by reaching out to municipalities across the province to sign a proclamation in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; and WHEREAS: By recognizing September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, it helps to raise awareness about childhood cancer, to remember the lives taken too soon, to stand with the families continuing to fight, and to celebrate with those who have won their battle; and THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September 2023, as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Month
WHEREAS: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a diagnostic term used to describe impacts on the brain and body of individuals prenatally exposed to alcohol. FASD is a lifelong disability. Individuals with FASD will experience some degree of challenges in their daily living, and need support with motor skills, physical health, learning, memory, attention, communication, emotional regulation, and social skills to reach their full potential. Each individual with FASD is unique and has areas of both strengths and challenges’; and WHEREAS: fasdNL is a pan-provincial organization that educates, provides supports and resources, and raises awareness about fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) in Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Canada; and WHEREAS: fasdNL is leading a three-year FASD prevention, awareness, training, and collaborative action project in the four Atlantic provinces; and WHEREAS: FASD Awareness month is devoted to raising awareness of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) to improve prevention of FASD and diagnosis and support for individuals with FASD and broad public awareness helps to put FASD on the ‘map’; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September 2023, as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s.

Chinese Peoples’ Railroad DayWHEREAS: 17,000 Chinese pioneers were recruited to Canada in the 1880s to help build the transcontinental railroad. The railway united Canada from coast to coast and laid the foundation for economic and industrial prosperity; and WHEREAS: Tragically, over 4,000 Chinese railroad workers died during construction due to unsafe working conditions, landslides, and premature blastings; and WHEREAS: After being recruited, the Chinese were banned from Canada through the Chinese Immigration Act (also known as the “Chinese Exclusion Act”), which took place on July 1, 1923 (what most Canadians call Canada Day, which the Chinese Community calls "Humiliation Day"); and WHEREAS: The Chinese Exclusion Act's 100th anniversary is on July 1st, 2023. On this day, the Foundation to Commemorate the Chinese Railroad Workers in Canada calls upon our 14 capital cities to proclaim July 1, 2023, Chinese Peoples’ Railroad Day to honour the Chinese Railroad Workers’ contribution to the building of the railway. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim July 1, 2023, as Chinese Peoples’ Railroad Day in the City of St. John’s. |

National Deafblind Awareness MonthWHEREAS: Deafblindness is a unique disability that incorporates the loss of both sight and hearing. Individuals who are deafblind can live full, meaningful lives as independently as possible with the right supports in place, such as intervenor services; and WHEREAS: National Deafblind Awareness Committee support community partners and individuals who are deafblind to increase their independence and improve their quality of life through specialized services; and WHEREAS: Everyone is encouraged to help promote deafblindness by attending an awareness event and proclaiming June as National Deafblind Awareness Month in your community and checking out the calendar of events at www.deafblindnetworkontario.com (that includes flag raisings and lighting up of local landmarks in communities across Canada); and WHEREAS: June should be designated as National Deafblind Awareness Month to recognize and celebrate the contributions that individuals who are deafblind make in their communities with the support of intervenors who serve as a bridge to communication for individuals who are deafblind; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim June 2023 as National Deafblind Awareness Month.
Brain Injury Awareness MonthWHEREAS: Brain injury continues to be the number one disabler and killer of those under 40 years of age; and WHEREAS: The impacts of an acquired brain injury may affect the person’s cognitive, physical, psychological, mental-health and social well-being, with potentially life-altering effects on their families, and friends; and WHEREAS: The NL Brain Injury Association, developed in 1984, advocates for brain injury survivors to enhance their lives. The association identifies the needs of survivors, their families, and friends and advocates for quality care and services, and improves public awareness of brain injury through education; and WHEREAS: Designating June as Brain Injury Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s may help to reduce incidents, promote education and awareness, and aid survivors of brain injury to rebuild their lives and achieve their maximum potential; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim June 2023 as Brain Injury Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s.
Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) Awareness WeekWHEREAS: Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, non-communicable, debilitating inflammatory skin disease, characterized by painful skin lesions, for which there is no known cure; and WHEREAS: HS Heroes, a registered Not-For-Profit, is a community for people living with HS dedicated to increasing awareness, and educating and advocating for those whose lives have been affected by the disease; whether a patient, family member, friend, caregiver, or health care professional; and WHEREAS: As many as 4% of men, women, and children in St. John’s and across Canada are living with HS, but may not have a diagnosis due to lack of both patient and physician awareness; and WHEREAS: HS is a painful, disfiguring, and disabling disease that has an adverse impact on the quality of life on those living with this disease; understanding and compassion for those with HS, and timely, proper diagnosis is vital; and WHEREAS: The understanding and acceptance of the general public is an important factor in patients’ treatment and health. HS Awareness Week provides an opportunity to increase awareness, correct misconceptions, promote education and support, recognize the struggles of those effected, and shorten the delay in diagnosis; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim June 5 to 11, 2023 as Hidradenitis Suppurativa Awareness Week in the City of St. John’s.
World Kidney Cancer DayWHEREAS: The International Kidney Cancer Coalition (IKCC) has declared Thursday, June 15, 2023, to be World Kidney Cancer Day; and WHEREAS: Kidney Cancer Canada | Cancer du rein Canada is a national, bilingual community of patients, caregivers and health professionals who work to provide every Canadian touched by kidney cancer with support, education, information and advocacy for their care pathways and treatment options. Kidney Cancer Canada | Cancer du rein Canada is affiliated with the IKCC organization; and WHEREAS: World Kidney Cancer Day will be recognized by six major cities in the Atlantic provinces by proclamation and/or presentation and/or illumination. Kidney Cancer Canada | Cancer du rein Canada will be hosting two virtual coffee-chats for patients and caregivers to safely share their experiences and a webinar on anxiety and a kidney cancer diagnosis as well as participating in the Global Symposium hosted by the IKCC; and WHEREAS: It is hoped that the activities mentioned above will spread awareness of kidney cancer as a significant health issue and that it is possible to live a full life with kidney cancer; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim June 15, 2023, as World Kidney Cancer Day in the City of St. John’s.
Longest Day of SMILES®WHEREAS: Operation Smile Canada is a global medical charity providing free, life-changing surgeries and medical care to children born with cleft conditions around the world; and WHEREAS: Every 3 minutes, a child is born with a cleft condition, and lack of access to safe, effective surgery means that easily treatable conditions like cleft lip and cleft palate can become fatal; and WHEREAS: Operation Smile Canada believes every child born with a cleft condition deserves exceptional surgical care; and WHEREAS: The Longest Day of SMILES® will unite Canadians from coast to coast to coast as they raise awareness and funds; and WHEREAS: On June 18, 2023, the citizens of St. John’s are encouraged to learn more about how to support this worthy cause by visiting www.longestdayofsmiles.ca; and WHEREAS: Our community can help celebrate the Longest Day of SMILES® by posting #longestdayofsmiles on social media. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim June 18, 2023, as the Longest Day of Smiles in the City of St. John’s.
World Refugee DayWHEREAS: World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls each year on June 20 and recognizes the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. For 2023 World Refugee Day focuses on solutions for refugees and the power of inclusion; and WHEREAS: the City of St. John’s is committed to developing a welcoming community and fostering an inclusive environment where diverse cultures are celebrated, and all citizens enjoy full participation in our society; and WHEREAS: the City of St. John’s has partnered with the Association for New Canadians on a Photo Exhibit at City Hall featuring recent refugees titled A Day in the Life of a Newcomer to Canada; and WHEREAS: the City encourages all residents to recognize that diversity is our strength and to view this Exhibit as an opportunity to welcome newcomers to their new home and become part of their settlement experience; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim June 20, 2023, to be World Refugee Day in the City of St. John’s.
Indigenous Survivors’ DayWHEREAS: City Council recognizes the historical injustices endured by Indigenous peoples due to colonization, forced assimilation, and systemic injustices; and WHEREAS: Indigenous Survivors Day on June 30 provides an opportunity to acknowledge the resilience, strength, and cultural heritage of Indigenous communities who have persevered through historical traumas.; and WHEREAS: Designating June 30 as Indigenous Survivors’ Day creates a platform for healing, education, and dialogue by raising awareness about the unique struggles faced by Indigenous peoples; and WHEREAS: This observance serves as a solemn reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Indigenous communities, and highlights the importance of supporting their cultural heritage and promoting understanding; and WHEREAS: By implementing Indigenous Survivors Day on June 30, City Council demonstrates its commitment to honoring Indigenous survivors, promoting healing, and building a more equitable and inclusive city. Guillain-Barré Syndrome Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy Awareness MonthWHEREAS: The Month of May, has been internationally designated as "GBS and CIDP Awareness Month" to educate the public and to focus attention on Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) and Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), rare, paralyzing and potentially catastrophic disorders of the peripheral nerves; and WHEREAS: Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), and their variants such as Multifocal Motor Neuropathy (MMN), are rare conditions which are paralyzing and potentially catastrophic inflammatory disorders of the peripheral nerves, which can be characterized by rapid onset of weakness and, often, paralysis of the legs, arms, breathing muscles and face, in some cases leading to complete paralysis and requiring life-sustaining hospital care; and WHEREAS: the cause of GBS, CIDP, and MMN is unknown, and these conditions can develop in any person, regardless of age, gender, or ethnic background; and WHEREAS: GBS, CIDP, and MMN have a slow and unpredictable recovery, patients and their families face an uncertain future, usually requiring months of hospital care without knowing if or when they will recover, or whether they will face long-term disabilities. Earlier diagnosis, treatment, and access to rehabilitation services can improve the chances of avoiding permanent lifelong residual damage of the nerves; and WHEREAS: in 2003, GBS/CIDP Foundation of Canada, a patient organization providing support, education, research, and advocacy, was founded so that no patient or family would go through GBS, CIDP, MMN or their variants alone. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim May 2023, as GBS/CID Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s.
Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness MonthWHEREAS: It is imperative that communities across Canada be reminded of the importance of sun safety; and WHEREAS: Over-exposure to UV radiation is one of the major causes of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers; and WHEREAS: Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. 1 in 6 Canadians born in the 1990s will get skin cancer in their lifetimes; and WHEREAS: Many people seek sun without taking the advisable precautionary measures and are unaware that any darkening of skin colour, including a tan, is indicative of UV damage; and WHEREAS: Skin self-examinations should be performed on a monthly basis because skin cancers are highly treatable when detected early; and WHEREAS: Save Your Skin Foundation is dedicated to the fight against non-melanoma skin cancers, melanoma and ocular melanoma through nationwide education, advocacy, and awareness initiatives; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim May 2023 as Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness MonthWHEREAS: Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable, often disabling, demyelinating neurological disease affecting an estimated 100,000 Canadians as well as their families, friends, and employers; and WHEREAS: MS symptoms vary widely and may lead to problems with numbness, coordination, vision and speech, fatigue, as well as weakness, mobility issues and even paralysis; and WHEREAS: people with MS are often misunderstood because many of their symptoms including fatigue, weakness, cognition difficulties, vision loss, and depression are "invisible"; and WHEREAS: although there is no known cure, with early drug therapy and proper healthcare management, disease progression can be slowed, helping people with MS to live active, rewarding, and productive lives; and WHEREAS: The S’Myelin Warriors Newfoundland and Labrador is a local not-for-profit group raising awareness of MS that is made up of volunteers who advocate and bring support to people living with MS in Newfoundland and Labrador; and WHEREAS: increased awareness and public education not only enhances the quality of life of people living with MS, but also stimulates funds for vital research aimed at developing more disease-modifying treatments and ultimately a cure; and WHEREAS: the dedication and commitment of the supporters and volunteers here today makes this possible; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim May 2023 as MS Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s.
Provincial Francophonie MonthWHEREAS: the month of May has been declared provincially, the month of the provincial Francophonie, to mark the 50th anniversary of the provincial and St. John’s associative movement; and WHEREAS: on May 30, communities across Newfoundland and Labrador will jointly mark Provincial Francophonie Day; and WHEREAS: the Journée provinciale de la francophonie focuses on celebrating and recognizing the contributions made by Francophones to improve their communities, families, and workplaces; and WHEREAS St-John’s is the city of legends, and the Francophone presence has contributed greatly to the history and heritage of our community; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim May 2023 as Provincial Francophonie Month in the City of St. John’s.
Recreation MonthWHEREAS: The City of St. John’s recognizes that recreation enhances quality of life, active living and lifelong learning, helps people to live happier and longer, develops creativity, and builds healthy bodies and positive lifestyles; and WHEREAS: recreation provides opportunities for personal growth and development for people of all abilities and can be especially helpful to people living with disabilities; and WHEREAS our parks, open spaces, and trails ensure ecological sustainability, provide space to enjoy nature, help maintain clean air and water, and preserve plant and animal wildlife; and WHEREAS recreation is an important contributor to community economic development, which creates jobs, fosters tourism, and makes communities more attractive places in which to live, learn, work and play; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim June 2023 to be Recreation Month.
Heart Failure Awareness WeekWHEREAS: over 750,000 people of all ages in Canada are living with heart failure, and heart failure is expected to cost the Canadian economy $2.8 billion per year by 2030; and WHEREAS: people with heart failure experience debilitating symptoms such as shortness of breath, swelling and exhaustion, and people who care for those with heart failure are often overwhelmed and stressed; and WHEREAS: the Canadian Heart Failure Society is an organization of volunteer cardiovascular professionals and patients who work hard to improve care for patients with heart failure in close collaboration with the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, the Canadian Council of Cardiovascular Nurses, the Canadian Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, the HeartLife Foundation, and the Québec Heart Failure Society; and WHEREAS: initiated by the Canadian Heart Failure Society and its partner organizations, Canadian Heart Failure Awareness Week is now celebrated across Canada to improve awareness of and education on heart failure; and WHEREAS: Heart Failure Awareness Week is an opportunity to raise awareness of the causes of heart failure and the impact it has on individuals living with heart failure and on their caregivers; THEREFORE: We do by these presents proclaim and declare that May 1–7, 2023, shall be known as “Heart Failure Awareness Week” in St. John’s. Youth WeekWHEREAS: There is an increasing interest in intentional youth development through recreation in Canada that is founded on a substantial and growing body of research to support the role of recreation in the positive development of youth; and WHEREAS: Meaningful youth engagement through recreation emphasizes access, equity and social justice, and leads to positive youth development; and WHEREAS: National Youth Week reminds us all of the valuable contributions that recreation and parks can make to youth development and that youth can make to community development; and WHEREAS: National Youth Week is endorsed by a network of agencies and individuals committed to the positive development of youth; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim May 1 to 7, 2023, as Youth Week in the City of St. John’s.
Early Childhood Educators’ Week 2023WHEREAS: The Association of Early Childhood Educators of Newfoundland and Labrador represents those working in child care and related fields throughout the province; and WHEREAS: Early childhood educators provide developmentally appropriate care and education to children from birth to age twelve in a variety of settings; and WHEREAS: Such care and education fosters the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth and development of these children and supports families in a variety of ways; and WHEREAS: This support of children and families insures the future health of our society; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim the week of May 28, 2023, as Early Childhood Educators’ Week in the City of St. John’s.
Pick it Up for YYT DayWHEREAS: Clean St. John’s exists as a community-based organization dedicated to promoting the involvement of all St. John’s citizens in environmental stewardship; and WHEREAS: Major litter sources that contribute to the litter problems are improper commercial refuse putouts, including dumpsters; improper household refuse, construction and demolition sites, loading docks, uncovered vehicles, motorists, and pedestrians; and WHEREAS: Over 8000 volunteers are expected to take part in this spring cleanup campaign from schools, individuals, youth groups, tenant associations, service organizations, environmental groups, and businesses; and WHEREAS: It is expected that over 40 tons of garbage will be collected; and WHEREAS: This spring has been targeted for a city-wide cleanup campaign to encourage citizens, business, and community groups to assist in the cleanup of harmful litter that pollutes the environment; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, hereby proclaim today, May 1, 2023, as the start of this spring’s Pick it Up for YYT Clean Up Campaign in the City of St. John’s.
World Press Freedom DayWHEREAS: a healthy, professional news media is essential for the proper functioning of civil society and democracy at the local, regional, federal and international levels, and WHEREAS: The Public Policy Forum declares — on its website for the 2017 report The Shattered Mirror: News, Democracy and Trust in the Digital Age — that “real news is in crisis” in this country, and WHEREAS: according to Canada’s federal government’s Canadian Heritage department, from 2008 to August 2021, almost 450 news outlets have closed, with nearly 63 of those closures happening since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and WHEREAS: St. John’s is among 29 municipalities — home to more than 13 million people in nine provinces across Canada — that have passed motions since 2020 voicing support for journalism in aid of democracy; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim May 3, 2023 as World Press Freedom Day in the City of St. John’s.
World Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) DayWHEREAS: Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) is a rare but very complex and serious lung disease, which is progressive and potentially fatal. PH is defined by high blood pressure in the lungs, which leads to enlargement and weakness of the right side of the heart-a serious type of heart failure. PH can strike people of all backgrounds, ages, and genders; and WHEREAS: Common symptoms of PH (shortness of breath, bluish hands, feet and lips, chest pain, lightheadedness, and extreme tiredness) are often misdiagnosed, delaying appropriate treatment; and WHEREAS: It is estimated that approximately 5,000 Canadians have been diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, but as many as 10,000 may be affected by the condition; and WHEREAS: While there is currently no cure for PH, thanks to available treatments, many patients are living longer, healthier lives; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim May 5 2023 as World Pulmonary Hypertension Day in the City of St. John’s.
Moose Hide Campaign DayWHEREAS: the Moose Hide Campaign an Indigenous-led grassroots movement of men, boys, and all Canadians - standing up to end violence against women and children; and WHEREAS: the Moose Hide Campaign was founded on the side of the 'Highway of Tears' in British Columbia in response to the injustices and violence faced by many women and children in Canada, particularly those who are Indigenous; and WHEREAS: half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of violence since the age of 16 and this reality is worse for Indigenous women; and WHEREAS: the Moose Hide Campaign has distributed nearly three million moosehide pins that each create five conversations about issues of violence against women and children; and WHEREAS: by wearing the moosehide pin is your commitment to honour, respect and protect the women and children in your life, work to end gender-based violence and take action towards reconciliation with Indigenous peoples; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim May 11, 2023, as Moose Hide Campaign Day in the City of St. John’s.
World Schizophrenia Awareness DayWHEREAS: Approximately 2,000 people are living with Schizophrenia in St. John’s, each with family and friends who are also deeply affected by the illness; and WHEREAS: We acknowledge and support every part of our unique and diverse community in St. John’s; and WHEREAS: Schizophrenia is highly stigmatized and lacks accurate representation in the media. World Schizophrenia Awareness Day was created to fight against stigma and make it easier for people to seek help; and WHEREAS: The Schizophrenia Society of Newfoundland and Labrador wishes to inspire everyone to learn more about this mental illness in support of the members of our community with lived experience. THEREFORE: I, Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary, do hereby proclaim May 24, 2023, as World Schizophrenia Awareness Day in the City of St. John’s.
Menstrual Health DayWHEREAS: This day highlights the importance of menstrual equity and public education that advocates for equitable access to proper menstrual hygiene; and WHEREAS: Menstrual Health Day raises awareness about the challenges that women, girls and gender diverse people experience due to menstruation. It also highlights the importance of menstrual hygiene. Talking about this is an important part of reducing the stigma around periods; and WHEREAS: It is a time to speak positively about periods and help end the stigma around them, while understanding the need for equity, including providing marginalized communities with access to free menstrual hygiene products that reduce period poverty in St. John's; and WHEREAS: Through open dialogue to help counter taboos surrounding periods, we can work to promote equitable access to hygiene needs and products. THEREFORE I, Mayor Danny Breen, on behalf of St. John's City Council, do hereby proclaim May 28, 2023 as “Menstrual Health Day” in the City of St. John's.

World Parkinson’s Awareness MonthWHEREAS: April 11 is a day to mark World Parkinson’s Awareness Day and to raise awareness for Parkinson's Disease (PD), a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by the nerves. Some medications help with symptoms, but to date, there is no cure, and for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s, no hope; and WHEREAS: Over 110,000 people live with PD in Canada, and over 25 people are diagnosed daily. The month of April aims to help Canadians understand the reality of PD and to demonstrate our support to those living with PD and their families. Unfortunately, 1 in 37 people alive today will be diagnosed with Parkinson's in their lifetime. Parkinson's Disease doesn't discriminate by race, economic level, or region; and WHEREAS: Currently, those with PD and their families are struggling with this reality. However, we cannot ignore Parkinson's Disease. Recognition that April is Parkinson's Awareness Month is an excellent opportunity to educate the public about Parkinson's Disease and its impact on our families and community; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 2023 as World Parkinson’s Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s.
National Poetry MonthWHEREAS: we value poetry for its continual reinvigoration of language, its ability to teach old ideas new tricks, and its capacity to help us see the world anew and more fully understand the human experience; and WHEREAS: St. John’s is home to many poets and several publishers of poetry, and these individuals and businesses have local, national, and international significance and make both cultural and economic contributions to our city; and WHEREAS: 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of National Poetry Month in Canada—this year with the theme of “joy”; and WHEREAS: the League of Canadian Poets challenges everyone to find opportunities to celebrate poetry and literature throughout April; and WHEREAS: this challenge is supported locally by Writers NL; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 2023 as National Poetry Month in the City of St. John’s.
National Volunteer WeekWHEREAS: The City of St. John’s recognizes the enormous contribution that volunteers and community organizations make to the social, cultural, and economic development of our province; and WHEREAS: It has been recognized that volunteers in Newfoundland and Labrador have a significant and positive impact on the quality of life for our citizens; and WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s acknowledges the theme “VOLUNTEERING WEAVES US TOGETHER” for Volunteer Week 2023, and recognizes the many people who contribute to our city by volunteering. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 16 to 22, 2023, as Volunteer Week in the City of St. John’s.
World Primary Immunodeficiency WeekWHEREAS: ImmUnity Canada’s vision is that all Canadians with immunodeficiency disorders have access to the resources they need to thrive, works with patient families and caregivers as well as healthcare professionals, and empowers people impacted by immunodeficiency disorders to live well through education, support, advocacy, community-building, and research; and WHEREAS: ImmUnity Canada provides both national as well as regional/provincial services related to immunodeficiency including education, support, advocacy, and research to thousands of patients; and WHEREAS: ImmUnity Canada will unite its supporters across Canada during World Primary Immunodeficiency Week; and WHEREAS: The walk will amplify the voice of patients and those who support them to share why it is so important that people understand their needs, and the implications of not respecting or upholding our rights as individuals and as patients with a rare disease; and WHEREAS: The goal is to increase the awareness and advocacy in support of the Primary Immunodeficiency population in our city and across Canada; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 22 to 29, 2023 as World Primary Immunodeficiency Week in the City of St. John’s.
National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness WeekWHEREAS: The Canadian Transplant Association (CTA) was created in 1987 to raise awareness about organ donation and celebrate the success of transplants in saving lives; and WHEREAS: Members of the CTA consist of transplant recipients, athletes, and volunteers dedicated to promoting organ and tissue transplants, and providing support networks to donors and recipients; and WHEREAS: last year in Canada, there were 4500 Canadians awaiting a lifesaving organ transplant; and WHEREAS: 75 people could receive tissue from one donor; and WHEREAS: one organ and tissue donor can save up to eight lives and enhance as many as 75; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 24 to 30, 2023, as National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week in the City of St. John’s.
World Autism Awareness DayWHEREAS: World Autism Awareness Day was created by the United Nations General Assembly and is acknowledged annually on April 2. The Autism Society, Newfoundland & Labrador (ASNL) continuously works to center Autistic voices and support individuals and families not only on April 2 but every day; and WHEREAS: Autism is a Neurotype and part of the range of natural variation in human neurological development. Human beings have a diverse range of Neurotypes — “Neuro” meaning brain. This diversity in human neurotype is what we call “Neurodiversity”; and WHEREAS Neurodiversity (“Brain Diversity”) is a part of nature’s normal biodiversity. This biodiversity ensures all species have healthy ecosystems to thrive in. Autism is a Neuro (“brain”) developmental (“process of developing”) difference and may therefore be on a different developmental timeline. Autistics may avail of supports in different areas at different times in their life across their lifespan; and WHEREAS: One in 45 Newfoundland and Labrador children and youth, ages 5 thru 17 are diagnosed with autism. (Public Health Agency of Canada/Information not available for adult-age individuals); and WHEREAS: Autism Society, Newfoundland & Labrador is dedicated to promoting the development of individual, lifelong, and community-based support and services for autistic people and continuously works to promote acceptance of neurodiversity through listening, actioning, and advocacy; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 2, 2023, as World Autism Awareness Day in the City of St. John’s.
Green Shirt DayWHEREAS: After the devastating events of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash that took the lives of sixteen passengers, Humboldt Broncos defenseman Logan Boulet succumbed to his injuries April 7th; and WHEREAS: Logan’s parents Bernadine and Toby Boulet offered to donate his organs so that six lives could live on; and WHEREAS: Logan had registered as an organ donor, after being inspired by his coach and mentor Ric Suggitt who was also an organ donor and saved six lives when he passed in 2017; and WHEREAS: as news spread of the organ donation by this young hockey player, it is estimated that almost 150,000 people registered to become organ donors in the days and weeks that followed. To date this is the largest number of Canadians registering to become organ donors in Canadian history due to one event; and WHEREAS: Green Shirt Day was created to honour, remember, and recognize all the victims and families of the fatal crash and to continue Logan’s legacy by inspiring Canadians to talk to their families and register as organ donors; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 6, 2023, as Green Shirt Day in the City of St. John’s. I encourage all citizens to wear green, register their decision to become organ and tissue donors, and share that decision with their family.
Parental Alienation Awareness/Bubbles Love DayWHEREAS: Parental Alienation deprives children of their right to love and be loved by their whole family and it is very damaging to children; and WHEREAS: behaviors such as speaking negatively about a parent to, or in front of, a child can destroy the bond between a loving parent and child; and WHEREAS: awareness to this issue creates education and understanding to better the lives of the children in our community; and WHEREAS: April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Parental Alienation is considered a form of child psychological abuse; and WHEREAS: this year is the 2023 annual Parental Alienation Awareness Day, and the caring citizens of our community will gather together and join others around the world to blow Bubbles of Love to symbolize that "As bubbles flow freely, so should the natural love that a child has for both parents and both sides of their family;" THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 25, 2023, as Parental Alienation Awareness Day & Bubbles of Love Day in the City of St. John’s. |

Black History MonthWHEREAS: Black History Month is an internationally recognized annual celebration designed to highlight and recognize the actions, achievements and contributions of Black people around the world. WHEREAS: We currently live on unceded Indigenous territory, and Black Lives Matter NL knows that as there is no Black liberation on stolen land; and WHEREAS: Black Lives Matter NL asks the City of St. John’s to recognize and strengthen the historical relationships between Indigenous Peoples and the Black community; and WHEREAS: Black people have been a part of Canada, since the early 1600’s, and have contributed to the country’s and province’s growth, despite the presence of systemic anti-Black racism and other forms of systemic oppression; WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s recognizes the significant cultural, social, political and economic contributions that Black people continue to make to the City of St. John’s and across the province. WHEREAS: Black Lives Matter NL is a non-profit organization that fights against anti-Black racism, supports the Black community of Newfoundland and Labrador, fosters Black-centric networks, and works towards liberation from all state-sanctioned forms of oppression, injustice violence and brutality against vulnerable and marginalized communities; and WHEREAS: We ask that The City of St. John’s and community partners of BLMNL pledge to host inclusive events and activities which focus on celebrating Black peoples within the province in the month of February and throughout the year; and WHEREAS: BLMNL also pledges to host online events, such as ‘Coils, Curls and Conversations: Redefining Our Standards of Beauty’ designed to celebrate the multiplicity of Black people and cultures in NL, as well as educate and create awareness about racism, colourism and texturism; and WHEREAS: The City recognizes that proclaiming February as Black History Month is only one small step in the long journey towards dismantling systemic racism and oppression of Black people and other marginalized groups in our community, and thus The City of St. John’s commits to take more steps towards this goal; and THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim February as Black History Month in the City of St. John’s. Violence Prevention MonthWHEREAS: the Violence Prevention Initiative of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is based on a vision that the people of our province will live in safe, caring communities, where there is an inherent respect for each other, and violence of any sort is unacceptable; and WHEREAS: the solution to eradicating violence against those most at risk in our society—women, children, and youth, Aboriginal women and children, persons with disabilities, older persons, and others who are victims of violence because of ethnicity, sexual orientation, or economic status—is through a collaborative effort between the Provincial Government and the community to improve services and to educate all residents of our province about violence prevention; and WHEREAS: the City of St. John’s, with its community partners has been working to improve services to victims of violence and violence prevention programs for many years; and, WHEREAS: the City of St. John’s promotes self-reliant, healthy, educated individuals and families living in safe, nurturing communities; and WHEREAS: the City of St. John’s has made a commitment to partner with the community to seek long-term solutions to violence; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim February as Violence Prevention Month in the City of St. John’s, February 6, 2023.
Eating Disorders Awareness WeekWHEREAS: An Eating Disorder is a serious mental illness with often devastating physical implications; and WHEREAS: Eating Disorders affect many individuals and families in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador; and WHEREAS: Recovery from an eating disorder is a journey that includes support from families and caregivers; and WHEREAS: The Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador is the leading advocacy group dedicated to promoting support, treatment services, and providing public support services and information about matters related to eating disorders throughout the province; and WHEREAS: February 1–7, 2023, is dedicated across Newfoundland and Labrador and the entire country as a special time when many educational and awareness activities take place to help raise the level of understanding of Eating Disorder Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery; and WHEREAS: The theme for Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2023 is “Transforming the Narrative from Asks to Action”; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim February 1, 2023 as Eating Disorders Awareness Week in the City of St. John’s. International Walk and Wheel to School DayWHEREAS: The City of St. John’s recognizes that February is International Winter Walk and Wheel to School month (iWALK-iWHEEL). iWALK-iWHEEL gives children, parents, school teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of active transportation; and WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s Recreation Division has celebrated iWALK-iWHEEL for 13 years, and would like to continue to bring awareness to this event in our community; and WHEREAS: In recognition of iWALK-iWHEEL 2023, the City of St. John’s is encouraging all students in St. John’s to participate by walking or wheeling to school on February first . The City of St. John’s is supporting this initiative by encouraging schools to host school walks and providing brochures containing safe walking tips to distribute to students, and resource packages for teachers to encourage walking and wheeling to school. Furthermore, City of St. John’s After School Programs are participating by providing participants with the opportunity to walk and wheel after school; and WHEREAS: By walking and wheeling to and from school, students can experience firsthand how easy it is to incorporate regular physical activity into their daily lives; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim February 1, 2023 as International Walk & Wheel to School Day in the City of St. John’s. International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital MutilationWHEREAS International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is an opportunity to honour everyone— including women, girls, boys, men and gender diverse people—who is actively and courageously working towards an end to this harmful practice, and WHEREAS 4.1 million girls are still at risk of mutilation each year, including girls in Canada, and WHEREAS female genital mutilation (FGM) is an issue in more than 90 countries on every continent except Antarctica, and there are at least 200 million FGM survivors in the world, including an estimated 100,000 or more survivors in Canada, and WHEREAS FGM has no benefits and causes only harm, including death, difficulties with urination, menstruation and sexual intimacy; post-traumatic stress disorder, gender dysphoria and body dysmorphia and increased maternal and child mortality—and is recognized by the United Nations and other global organizations as child abuse and an abuse of a girl’s fundamental human rights, and WHEREAS International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate all national and international efforts, especially grassroots efforts, to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5, which calls for the elimination of FGM and other harmful practices by 2030, and WHEREAS the city of St. John’s, in the Province of Newfoundland Labrador supports the human rights of women and girls so they can live a life free from the violence that is female genital mutilation; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that February 6, 2023, shall be known as International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation.
Wear Red Canada DayWHEREAS: Heart disease is the number one killer of women worldwide and the leading cause of premature death for Canadian women, a fact unknown to many women and their healthcare providers; and WHEREAS: The Canadian Women’s Heart Health Alliance is an organization of volunteer health professionals and patients working hard to improve women’s heart health; and WHEREAS: Wear Red Canada Day is celebrated annually to raise awareness for all Canadians, but especially Canadian women, to be mindful, curious, and proactive in the management of their heart health and wellness; and WHEREAS: We want to see better prevention, diagnosis, and care and fewer women dying prematurely from heart disease; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim February, 13, 2023 Wear Red Canada Day in the City of St. John’s.
