
Residents are invited to attend the Grand Opening of the H.G.R. Mews Community Garden and Gardeners Gathering Event on Wednesday, June 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. The evening will celebrate gardening, accessibility, and community connection at the new garden space located at the H.G.R. Mews Community Centre, 60 Blackler Avenue.
During the event, attendees can enjoy gardening information booths, community exhibits, and family-friendly activities throughout the evening. The official grand opening ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. and will include remarks from invited guests and councillors, and an inaugural seed planting ceremony.
Participating organizations include the Wellness Coalition Avalon East, the NL Horticultural Society, Memorial University Botanical Garden, SeniorsNL, Agriculture in the Classroom NL, and the City of St. John’s. Children’s activities will include flower fling and paper craft stations, and attendees will also have the chance to win a dual-chamber composter as a door prize. This is a family-friendly event and registration is not required.
The H.G.R. Mews Community Garden includes 13 raised garden beds at varying heights, including 2 wheelchair-accessible beds and adaptive gardening tools funded by TradesNL. The space was designed with accessibility in mind, featuring paved access and inclusive garden design for gardeners of all abilities.
