The City of St. John’s is announcing the appointment of Karen Sherriffs to the position of Deputy City Manager, Community Services. The Deputy City Manager of Community Services is an integral part of the senior management team, providing leadership to the City’s housing, tourism, culture, events, recreation and business growth programs and services.
Karen replaces Tanya Haywood, who has been in the role since 2015 and is retiring. After 32 years of dedicated service to the City of St. John’s, Tanya leaves a lasting impact on recreation and community services. From her early leadership roles to serving as Deputy City Manager of Community Services, Tanya helped shape key facilities across the city and advanced initiatives in housing, tourism and events. She also represented the City on numerous boards, including the 2025 Canada Games Host Committee, one of the highlights of her career. Her leadership and commitment have helped build a stronger, more connected community.
“We are thrilled to welcome Karen Sherriffs to our senior management team,” said Mayor Danny Breen. “Karen’s extensive experience in recreation and her leadership on major initiatives like the 2025 Canada Games make her exceptionally well-prepared to continue advancing programs and services that strengthen our community. I also want to thank Tanya Haywood for her 32 years of dedicated service – her impact on the City and its residents is truly remarkable.”
With more than two decades of service in the City of St. John’s Recreation Division, including 15 years in management, Karen has built extensive experience in delivering programs and services that support the community.
In 2021, she was appointed CEO of the 2025 Canada Games Host Society, leading the successful delivery of the national event. As she concludes that role, Karen is stepping into the position of Deputy City Manager of Community Services, bringing strong leadership and deep expertise to support the City’s programs and initiatives.
“I am honoured to take on this role and continue the important work Tanya has led over the years,” said Karen Sherriffs, newly appointed Deputy City Manager of Community Services. “I look forward to supporting our incredible staff in the Community Services division and working with community partners to ensure St. John’s remains a vibrant, inclusive and connected city for everyone.”
Karen will assume the role on March 19, 2026.
