April 22 is Earth Day

Celebrate Earth Day

Earth Day has been celebrated on April 22 since 1970.

To recognize Earth Day this year, the City of St. John’s will partake in an Earth Day flag raising at City Hall at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 21.

The City has implemented numerous services and programs to protect our natural environment and to ensure wise use of resources. Waste and Recycling staff have been out in the community to educate and celebrate how individuals are taking small actions to make a big impact. Staff visited City Easter camps and participated in the Earth Day Market answering recycling and backyard composting questions.

Thank you, City residents, for reducing, reusing and recycling and playing your part in greenhouse gas (climate change) mitigation.

Strategic Plan includes Community and Corporate Climate Plans

The City of St. John’s strives to be sustainable today and for future; economically, environmentally and financially. The City has approved climate change plans for both the Community and City Corporate operations, setting greenhouse gas emission reduction towards NetZero by 2050 at the latest. Our Strategic Plan Our City, Our Future outlines details on the City’s commitment to be a sustainable city.

Clear Bags for Garbage Increased Curbside Recycling

In 2022, the City of St. John’s collected more curbside recycling than it had in the past five years. In fact, about 500 more tonnes of curbside recyclables were collected in 2022 than in 2021. Why the big increase in 2022? It was the first year the City of St. John’s required clear bags for curbside garbage and recycling became mandatory.

Furniture Reuse at Robin Hood Bay

If you are bringing gently-used furniture and household items to the Residential Drop Off (RDO) we encourage you to place it in the furniture donation bin before discarding your other items in the garbage bins.

The City of St. John’s in partnership with Home Again Furniture Bank and Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and initially funded by the MMSB, Canadian Parks and Recreation and the City of St. John’s, divert gently-used furniture and household items to individuals and families in need.
