The City of St. John’s is advancing the development of the Crosstown Shared-Use Path (SUP), with construction on the section between Canada Drive and Waterford Bridge Road beginning Monday, August 3. Work is expected to continue through December 2026.

During construction, motorists and pedestrians may experience traffic delays, lane reductions, and sidewalk closures within the work zone.

To complete this work, removal of some trees and shrubs will be required along the shared-use path route. However, new trees and shrubs will be replanted as part of this project. An arborist is involved to ensure that landscape plans, removals, replanting, transplanting and tree protection along the project route are completed according to industry best practices.

The project has been shaped through extensive public engagement, which began in 2023 and informed key design elements, including route alignment, surface materials, trailheads, rest areas, lighting, crosswalks, signals and wayfinding features.

The shared-use path has been designed to provide an accessible, inclusive and connected route for residents of all ages and abilities. Paved shared-use paths are wheelchair-friendly, stroller-friendly and provide a safer, smoother surface for people walking, rolling and cycling.

Developing a connected active transportation network is a key action in the City’s strategic plan, Our City, Our Future, and supports our goal of building and maintaining a safe, accessible system for all residents and visitors. In addition to the Crosstown SUP, the City is advancing planning and construction of several shared-use path projects to improve connectivity and support safe, multi-modal transportation throughout St. John’s.
