Election Update: City Finalizing Contingency Plans for Postal Strike

We know residents are eager for information on how the City will address the impact of the current postal strike on the upcoming municipal election. This is an unprecedented situation, and our staff are working quickly to finalize a strong plan that safeguards both access to voting and the integrity of the election.

St. John’s conducts its elections primarily by vote-by-mail, with roughly 90 percent of ballots cast this way in past elections. In-person voting options are also available for residents who wish to vote on election day.

Over the weekend, election staff developed contingency measures and began assessing how many vote-by-mail kits may still be within the postal system. We expect to have this information today, which will allow us to finalize our plans and provide a public update later today.

We thank residents for their patience and encourage everyone to stay tuned for further updates.
