Mayor Danny Breen was thrilled to join Joanne Thompson, Member of Parliament for St. John’s East, and the Honourable Fred Hutton, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, to announce public transit upgrades at City Hall today.

Funding of $50.3 million from all three levels of government will facilitate the purchase of 17 buses - eight hybrid and nine electric. This is an addition to the eight new hybrid busses that began to arrive in November, three of which are now operational, which were also funded by all three levels of government.

This investment will allow Metrobus to begin phasing out diesel buses. Additionally, Metrobus facilities will be upgraded to accommodate the charging and maintenance of the new zero-emission buses.

The Federal Government is investing $22.8 million in these projects, while the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is investing $16.7 million, and the City of St. John’s is contributing $10.7 million. MP Thompson also announced today an investment of more than $13 million in Baseline Funding through the Canadian Public Transit Fund (CPTF) for Metrobus Transit. This funding, which will be delivered over 10 years from 2026 until 2036, will help advance key improvements to St. John’s’ public transit system.

This investment aligns with our Resilient St. John’s Climate Plan and Council’s commitment to addressing climate change and becoming a net-zero community by 2050.
