Keeping Sports Fields Dog-Free, Safe and Enjoyable

The City of St. John’s is reminding residents that dogs are not permitted on sports facilities (sports fields, tennis and basketball courts, or other fenced recreational facilities) whether on or off leash. These spaces are reserved for recreation and organized sports and maintaining them as dog-free areas helps ensure they remain safe and well-maintained.

Even when it’s not visible, dog waste can leave behind bacteria and parasites that may pose health risks to people using the fields. This is especially important in sports fields, where players regularly contact the ground. Dog activity can also damage turf, creating bare or unsafe patches that take time and resources to repair.

The good news is that there are designated off leash dog parks throughout the city where dogs can run and play freely in a space designed just for them. These parks are a great option for both pets and their owners. Find your nearest dog park.

City staff understand that residents have different perspectives on this issue but keeping sports facilities dog-free helps protect their quality and ensures they’re ready for play each season.

Being a responsible pet owner makes a big difference:

  • Know where your dog can go: Sports facilities are off-limits, but designated dog parks are open and welcoming.
  • Keep your dog on a leash: Unless you’re in an approved off-leash area all dogs must be leashed. This helps keep your pet, and others, safe.
  • Stoop and scoop after your pet: If your dog does its business on any property other than your own, you must clean up after them immediately.
  • Keep your pets safe in vehicles: Don’t leave your pet unattended in a parked car, especially as temperatures rise.

Let’s work together to keep our public spaces clean, safe, and enjoyable for us and our furry friends.
