The City of St. John’s will temporarily install the planned landmark sign at the Mary Browns Centre in 2026 as part of a public engagement process to help determine its permanent location (review the below map for exact placement). The sign is scheduled to be installed during the week of August 10, with site preparation taking place this week. Installation is expected to take a few hours; however, it is weather dependent and requires dry conditions and low winds. We will provide an update once the sign has been installed.

“Following the feedback we received last year, it became clear there is strong interest in ensuring this project reflects community priorities,” said Mayor Danny Breen. “This temporary installation allows people to experience the sign in a real setting—its scale, presence and purpose—and provide more structured input. Our goal is to work with residents and other impacted parties to identify a permanent location that is appropriate both from a logistical standpoint and in terms of community fit.”

The City received significant feedback following the 2025 announcement of the landmark sign, which led to the decision to pause the original Bannerman Park location. Input received highlighted strong interest in the project, along with a wide range of suggestions for alternative sites. This temporary installation will help formalize that feedback by allowing residents to provide input based on in-person experience.

Engagement will be open until September 18, 2026. The sign will remain at this location throughout the fall. Feedback can be provided by:

• Providing written feedback and ideas through the project page on EngageStJohns.ca 
• Sending an email to engage@stjohns.ca; or
• Calling 311 and asking to speak to a member of the project team.

In addition, staff will also be on location periodically during the engagement period to collect in-person feedback.

A permanent location must meet key criteria, including being on City-owned land, providing adequate pedestrian access, ensuring visibility and supporting safe and accessible interaction. Locations such as Signal Hill, Southside Hills, Quidi Vidi Village, Harbourside Park and Cape Spear do not meet these requirements and are not being considered due to land ownership, operational, accessibility and/or environmental constraints.

The landmark sign is intended to serve as both a community feature and a visitor attraction. It will display the City’s name in large block lettering and include colour-changing LED lighting to recognize social causes and special occasions. It will also include decals on the back, providing opportunities to highlight local art and enhance community pride. For 2026, the City has provided the artwork for the decals.
