Making the Shift: Free Guidance for Home Energy Upgrades in St. John’s

Thinking about making your home more energy efficient but not sure where to start?

econext, in partnership with the City of St. John's, launched a new program today called Shift, to help homeowners take the guesswork out of renovations that save on energy, money, and the environment.

The Shift Program is free for St. John’s residents, and will connect you with the program’s Home Energy Navigators—staff who guide you step by step through the process of planning and completing your home upgrades. Whether you want to lower your monthly energy bills, reduce your environmental footprint, or boost your home’s value, the program is designed to make energy efficiency easier.

How It Works

  • Step one is a free appointment where the Home Energy Navigator staff learn about your home and your needs.
  • From there, you’ll receive guidance on completing an energy audit, information on potentially available grants, and access to a program-specific financing option through Shift’s financial partner, NLCU. The program team will also provide support to determine which upgrades would work best for your home.
  • While homeowners cover the cost of their energy audit and any renovations they choose to complete, all Shift Program services are free thanks to funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund, an endowment created by the Government of Canada.
  • For a limited period of time, initial energy audits for those participating in this program will be subsidized to $99.
The program is open to anyone who owns an existing home within the City of St. John’s boundary. (In-progress builds and multi-unit apartment buildings aren’t eligible, but the Shift team can connect you with any available local resources.)
