To commemorate World Refugee Day, the City of St. John’s is continuing to partner with the Association for New Canadians (ANC) on a newcomer-focused exhibit. This year’s event, titled “Everyone has a story to tell”, features students from the ANC’s language school displaying photographs of items from their home countries and explaining their significance in both English and their native languages. The exhibit will provide an insight into each participant’s background and form a narrative around their respective settlement journeys.

“St. John’s is proud to celebrate the rich cultural contributions of our newcomer community,” said Mayor Danny Breen. “This exhibit is a beautiful reminder that everyone has a unique story to tell, and by sharing these stories, we foster understanding, empathy, and build a more connected city.”

In addition to the exhibit, the City of St. John’s will proclaim June 20, 2024 as World Refugee Day in the City of St. John’s.

“We are thrilled to join Mayor Breen and again partner with the City of St. John’s on this wonderful initiative of inclusivity in proclaiming World Refugee Day,” said Megan Morris, Executive Director, Association for New Canadians. “It is an honour to have this kind of support in our mission of assisting refugees and other newcomers on their settlement journey.”

The exhibit is on display in the Wyatt Hall until July 3 and available for public viewing weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
