As temperatures rise, many residents are looking forward to cooling off and relaxing in backyard pools and hot tubs. Whether permanent or temporary, these amenities offer plenty of summer fun—but they also come with serious safety responsibilities.

The City of St. John’s reminds all residents to take proper precautions and follow City regulations when installing and using pools and hot tubs.

Permit and Installation Requirements

Before installation, contact the City’s Inspection Services Division to confirm whether a permit is required. This applies to all pools and hot tubs—including storable or inflatable models. Key safety requirements include:

• Overhead Wiring Hazards: Never install a pool or hot tub under or near overhead power or communication lines. Water and electricity are a dangerous mix.

• Electrical Safety: Any pool using pumps, lighting, or heating equipment must be installed by a qualified electrical contractor. Pools must be kept away from electrical devices such as lighting fixtures and receptacles to reduce risk of shock.

Fencing and Supervision

To help prevent accidents and unauthorized access, fencing and supervision are critical safety measures:

• Safety Barriers: All pools must be enclosed with a fence that meets City regulations. This includes having a self-closing, self-latching gate to keep children and pets safe.

• Active Supervision: Children should never use a pool or hot tub without the direct supervision of a responsible adult. Even small, portable pools pose a drowning risk.

By following these safety guidelines, residents can help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for everyone.
